This place is a solid place if you're looking to Hookah.  One of the best things about this place is they are cool with you bringing in outside drinks with a $5 per person corkage.  The hookahs are not much expensive BUT they limit you to 3 people per hookah so if you have a larger party you will need to get more than 1 hookah.  We ordered some food I forget what they were called.  They were filled with beef and were "something cigars".  They were good but it was a bit expensive.  Overall though this was a solid place to do hookah.

This place is like a hidden gem.Why go to one of those big, trendy, expensive hookah places when you could come here and have better food, better conversation and less of a hole in your wallet?  I was impressed with the juicy shawarma meat and the various baba ghanouj and hummus appetizer combos... and it was such a charming and cute spot!  The owner is a sweet man and he gave us free velvet cake!!  Always a plus.  But, seriously, even before that bonus we were all commenting about how great the place was.  I am from Montreal - the best place for north american middle eastern food... and this is the first place in NYC that compared to back home.  I tried it because the trusty yelp reviews were good, and I was not disappointed - go yelp reviews!!

Continuing our tour of hookah lounges, my boyfriend and I decided to eat and smoke at Sultana last Friday. It was a cold, rainy night and thus, the perfect night to stay in one place. It was especially perfect because Sultana is an amazing establishment overall!Let me start by describing the decor. It fits the typical hookah lounge mold as it is dim, lined with couches, and stocked with pillows, but something about Sultana is more appealing than the majority. The quasi-gothic lighting fixtures and eclectic middle-eastern decoration is what does it for me. We began with a combo platter- a plate of different dips and hummus, grape leaves, and salad, served with pita bread. We decided on two entrees that would be shared between us. The sulkofta kabob was grilled, herbed and spiced beef and was AMAZING. We ordered a chicken kabob as well which was great, but the beef just showed it up a bit. We were contemplating ordering dessert after we were done smoking our shisha, but minutes after we began smoking, the owner brought us a complimentary piece of red velvet cake that I absolutely loved! The owner was extremely friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in when there were only a few patrons in the restaurant until the moment we squeezed through the packed room to leave. It is evident that he genuinely cares about his clients and strives to provide everyone with the most enjoyable experience. He succeeds!

Went on a Saturday night for a birthday celebration with about 15 people. The place isn't big and the service was a bit slow at times, however Sultana accommodated everyone just fine. (It may have helped that we called a few days in advance to reserve ample space)Being a bit of a hookah lounge connoisseur, I can honestly report finding a hookah lounge in the city that doesn't blast its music so loudly that you can't hear the person in front of you is rare indeed. This alone makes Sultana stand out amongst its peers.- Tasty Unique Hookah Tobacco Flavors, Check- Cozy Atmosphere that's nice and chill, Check- BYOB for $5 per drunk, Check- Fun had closing out this joint to end my birthday? Check :)*Review based on hookah bar only*Ever since I smoked shisha in Egypt (3 US$ per hookah!), I've been dying to find a place as cheap, good, and also clean in the US.  Then came Sultana while I was exploring NY with some friends and after we found out Cafe Khufu was closed. Some important notes:1. each person absolutely has to buy a drink or bring a drink (not a problem: plenty of stores around that sell booze)2. max 3 people to a hookah3. additional charge for certain flavorsOur group of 6 shared the Cantaloupe and Sultana Mix flavors, which were strong and aromatic.  The attendant (owner?) was nice and attentive - always ready with extra tube tips whenever we accidentally dropped them on the floor (this happened often).  If I'm in NY again and fiending for some shisha, I'll go to Sultana.AMAZING! My boyfriend and I went there to get dinner. It was his first time trying hookah...and definitely a memorable one. The hookahs were great. We got there early, at around 5:30, and there was only one other group besides us. The place slowly filled up to about four or five groups, but it was still really nice and didn't get too loud or crowded. The place is small, but that just adds to the cozy atmosphere. :)Food was GREAT, though the portions were somewhat small. We ordered the chicken shwarama platter, split it between the two of us. It probably would have been just enough for one person but whatever, we were too busy enjoying our hookah to care! Also, the cardamom chai was FANTASTIC, definitely try it!Overall an awesome experience...we look forward to coming back! :DREALLY great food and beverage at this place.  But it comes with RULES.  No more than 3 people to a hookah, which makes 4 person parties tough unless you are hardcore hookah smokers.  You can bring wine or beer, no liquor, with a charge of $5 per person.  Or if you don't BYO, you must have minimum of $5 worth of drinks.  Which could be easy seeing as a bottle of water is $3.50!!!!The decor is sooo cool - want to do my apt just like this. The hookahs are good, strong and last very long.  Very attentive coal exchange.

I am friends w/ Laura K who came to NY from Chicago and wanted to go to a hookah bar. I recommended Sultana because of the great reviews on here. Also because it's BYOB so I thought it might be cheaper. I got there long after my friend had been there so I didn't eat. All I know is the table was not very tidy when I got there. There was not waitstaff, just a man - I am pretty sure it was Ali. These girls next to us left and thanked him by his name so I know it was the owner. He was the only waitstaff I noticed except for the occassional help of a girl - but she was not a waitress. She didn't even talk to us. When we arrived no one asked us if we needed or wanted anything. We bought a few beers next door at the deli (btw best deli ever!) and sat down and opened them. We smoked the hookah - the coals were changed a few times but we had to call Ali over a few times to do it. He would do the other tables and then walk right past ours w/o checking it. But after asking he did it one more time, so I'll give him credit for that. The bill came and it says Corkage $70. We were shocked. So we asked politely mind you, what that was and he answered in a really nasty way that it was $15/bottle. My friend said she thought it was $5 and he was nasty back saying who told you it was $5. He said could you imagine I charged $5/bottle, I'd be out of busines. There is no need to answer someone that way. So I was looking at him w/o saying anything, just like a confused look on  my face and he looks at me and says, do you have a problem, i'm telling you it's $15/bottle for wine and $5 for beer. He was really nasty - I didn't even say anything to him for him to answer me that way. So we paid the bill and left. Ok, negatives are aplenty. The owner is an old man w/ a mean face that isn't very nice -so the service is mediocre at best. Don't expect nice waitstaff. Don't expect busboys cleaning your table up either. Oh and remember that gratuity is included for parties of 6 or more or something so you get that old, I'm getting tipped no matter what treatment and service suffers cuz of that. Positives - well, it's too bad the owner is a nasty old man because it's a cute place. If you can stand calling someone over to do stuff all the time, then you'd be ok. It will get done. The decor is nice, the music is great - real arabic music - and not too loud so you can talk. The hookahs were nice but it's hard to mess that up. And it's BYOB, so that's good. BUT, if you do drink, I don't know about bringing wine. You'll pay $15/bottle for it to be opened. If you drink enough wine, you're better off just going someplace else and buying there drinks. What's the point of BYOB then if it's more expensive? No hard liquor is allowed. I recommend just bringing beer. It's $5/person no matter how many beers you bring in - I think.  You should double check that. Oh, and bring your own opener because you'll be sitting there begging for someone to come over all the time and you'll never get to drink it. You can go and may enjoy it but don't expect good service and ask about all the prices before you open anything. I wouldn't go back. I don't pay good money to be treated that way and talked to that way, and have an old man w/ a grumpy face serve me. Talk about killing the energy in a place. Good luck!

i can't believe people like this place. the food is less than passable. i had a rare meat craving, so i ordered the beef schwarma and added hummus for an extra $1. the pita was old, dry and falling apart as i ate it, the beef touch and overcooked, the portion average to small, and the flavor completely meh. and it cost me a whopping $9. the halal carts are hands down better. bereket in the nearby LES rocks this place 100 times over in terms of the quality and price of food.my friend ordered a diet coke and the $12 chicken kabab platter, and reported his plate to be mediocre. then he wanted to get a hookah, which i'd never tried, so i was open to it. our bill? something like 45 or 50 bux. seriously? completely not worth it. sultana does have redeeming qualities, but it depends what you want. if your goal is to eat, then i must once again point you to moustache or the slightly more expensive but oh-so-legit mamlouk in the same neighorhood. but if you want to just chill and enjoy a hookah at a BYO place (tho i think they have a corking fee? and might not allow liquor if i remember correctly), then this is a nice cozy, intimate environment to chill in. the people are nice, and service was alright. but the subpar food was completely unsatisfying and i left feeling ripped off. the desserts, btw, are all from the bakery next door - they share the kitchen. and the red velvet cupcakes SUCK - the worst i've ever had. the bone dry cake couldn't make up for the tasty frosting. maybe they should nuke it to disguise the dryness. it was awful. i couldnt' eat even half of one.in a city like new york, with cheap, affordable food on every block and awesome middle eastern smattered all over the EV,  i can't figure out how a kitchen like this stays open. go for the hookah and to BYO and relax, but if you want to eat well, save your money and go elsewhere.

This is an excellent place to go have a light meal and enjoy hookah.  I learned about this place from Yelp as I was visiting New York on business.  I smoke hookah as a form of relaxation and Sultana definately provided a great opportunity.  I arrived around 7:00pm and ordered a mango hookah, tea and beef shawarma.  I engaged the owner, Ali, with small talk.  Just as I had read in reviews, Ali definately treats his customers like royalty.  He was friendly, hospitable and attentive.  There was no crowd when I arrived, but I was expecting such having arrived relatively early.  Later that night Ali provided me with a piece of red velvet cake which was delicious.  I had an incredible time and cant wait to take my wife there when get gets to New York in a few days.  The hookahs were $15.00 which is a little higher in comparison to my experiences abroad, but it seems to be the running price in New York as all the places I reseached range from $15.00 - $25.00.

small, cozy, super friendly.  Incredibly gracious owner and host Ali will treat you like royalty and the experience overall is very comforting and laid back.  Hookas are good and the black, Egyptian tea is the best tea I have ever tasted.  This place also has some of the best dessert around.  Red Herring Velvet cake is absolutely delectable.Tell Ali Alex sent you and you will feel like you are the owner of the place.

I went there 2 days in a row. Very friendly service and the hookahs were just the way I like them. The next time I'm in New York, this will be my first stop!
