This is a strange little place with great ambiance. Much better than the three other Hookah bars in Boca that I checked out in the same night. Relax and smoke a Hookah while sipping on one of their many beers, teas or even Kava drinks. Local musicians and local poets, perform on a tiny stage. They even had a violin player while I was there. So, if you lean toward the artsy, you may just like this unusual little hideaway. What is a Hookah? It's basically just flavored tobacco that you pay an arm and a leg to smoke through these funky pipes. The only high you will get is a nicotine, dizzy, I want to puke high if you inhale too much. Oh, and they have brand new, disposable, in-the-package, little plastic devices (ask for it, it's free) that you put your mouth on while you smoke. It just fits on the end of the hose.

i have been on a hookah kick as of late. hookah and beer or hookah and wine - so long as there is hookah. a friend took me to Funky Buddha last night. it was an eerily quiet Thursday night drive down Federal Highway, a jog north of Glades Road and the empty-summer campus of FAU. the bar was quite small, fit snugly in an outdated 1980s strip mall. we entered and i was pleasantly surprised by the lame local art (that i knew would eventually warm up to me on beer numero dos); the heavy velvet curtains; the mishmash of thin wooden tables and low lying couches; and of course the lovely selection of bottled and draft beers. the tender was a young guy, super nice, and willing to suggest what beer to try or tobacco flavors to mix. we commented on the fact that the place was empty and he replied, "it is hit or miss with this place, but i am here until 2 am so relax; you should check out Wednesday nights - open mic - it gets packed" we chose the couch towards the front door so we could talk, smoke, and giggle in the corner of the quiet. we were the only patrons in the place until 11; at which time a group of college-aged kids strolled in, excited to sit, ready to voice their tobacco order. we giggled "college," but at the same time were thankful it turned out to be college night (Thursdays), because we received a $6.00 discount off our hookah (2 coals lasted two hours and for the discounted total of $11.00). i will be back, oh, Funky Buddha, thanks for your generous beer-gifting belly. (check their myspace for events at the Lounge)
