Having been here late at night many times for hookah and a beer tower, I never would have expected the food to be as good as it is. I have eaten here outside once and ordered in many times. The barbecue is usually fall off the bone delicious and the portions are extremely generous and rather inexpensive. The place is a bit of a hidden gem, being situated in an area of Jersey City that hasn't been "restored" yet. I'd recommend the ribs and chicken combination platter with french fries and rice. Maybe not a place to go if you're trying to tighten your belt literally, but if you're looking to do it figuratively then this is a can't miss.

Abbey's is an off the beaten path diamond in the rough. The atmosphere is mediocre at best and most patrons seem to be there for drinks and conversation. However, I don't go there for night life, I go for dinner. Order the BBQ chicken platter which is served without sauce (its seasoned to perfection) and comes with yellow rice and crispy fries. It costs $12 and even if you are hungry, it will serve two people (yes, trust me). No need to waste time considering anything else on the menu...this dish is the bomb. Its more than affordable and tastes amazing. You can get it delivered but the fries can get soggy that way, so its best to eat in. Give it a shot, you'll thank me later.

PORTION SIZE IS OUT OF CONTROL!Abbey's claims to be a Portuguese barbeque grill on their menu.  Their menu is mostly pretty basic bar food (1/2 chicken, burgers, steak, etc).  The part that caught my eye, however, was the ribs.  They have both pork and beef ribs.  1/2 rack pork ribs for $8 or a full rack for $14 is a REALLY good deal.  When I called to ask they said that they are babyback ribs.  When they arrived they seemed to be more like regular pork ribs...maybe teenager-back ribs...but not quite babyback.  They were dry rubbed ribs with a good BBQ aroma that were piled into a mountain of meat.  They weren't quite fall of the bone tender, but they were pretty easy to eat.  The up side to not being quite babyback is that there's more meat overall...the down side is that there's more fat and connective tissue to pick around.  Everything being said, the ribs were very good, and I'll definitely get them again. They give you some BBQ sauce to go along with the ribs.  It's a vinegar based sauce that is REALLY good, and goes perfectly with the ribs.Along with the ribs you get to choose 2 from: side salad, fries, and rice.  I got the fries and salad.  The amount of both that was given was about twice what I was expecting.  I had 3 mountains of food in front of me.  The fries were very fresh and quite good.  The salad was HUGE, and came with a balsamic vinegarette...also very good.I'd say they are a 4.5 star rounded up because of the price to portion size ratio.Water Refill Meter:  TBD
