Mezzo Mezzo Restaurant Reviews
by Pace W.
That evening all the girls met up to feast on what would be my second round of Greek cuisine for the day. Mezzo, also located at Ditmars and 33rd, had an amazing variety of dishes to satisfy everyone's palate. After two bottles of wine at the house and lots of reminiscing we were ravenous. We started with more wine to quench our thirst, a cold pikilia platter complete with hummus (chickpea dip), teramosalata (salmon roe dip), dolmas (grape leaves), tzatziki (herbed yogurt dip), and skordalia (potato garlic dip), and the marinated muscles. After we literally tore apart all of the muscles, we continued with a lamb plate with sauted vegetables so sweet they tasted like candy. The fried calamari rings were large, but the marinara sauce was watery. Save some of the taramosalata from the cold pikilia platter and dip it in that instead. The table of men behind us donated some of their saganaki (hard cheese, usually kasseri or kefalotyri, that they light on fire at the table) obviously amused by our gracious haggling. For some reason unbeknownst to me our table ordered a penne ala vodka- don't do it. As if this wasn't enough, the largest baklava I have yet to see arrived at our table courtesy of our extremely personable waiter, Mike.

Just chiming in with Sandra of LIC, who says that the guy who runs the comedy club there is a real putz. When the comedy club section of the restaurant opened this year, I went to Mezzo Mezzo see if my vaudeville style variety show might work there. [Being a LIC resident with almost my entire show living in Astoria/LIC, I figured, hey, this place is convenient.] I didn't speak directly with Mathew Taylor but left my contact info with the owner who seemed like a nice guy. Mathew called just once, left a nasty message on my voicemail about all the unanswered previous phone calls he's made to me, then when my wife called him back he berated my show, which he has never seen. Now armed with the info that that the guy spams and farms out your info to his performers, I ain't signing his list and my show stays in Manhattan. Thank-you Sandra for the heads up.

I absolutely love Mezzo Mezzo! It is truly an authentic restaurant--Greek staff amazing food. The spanakopita (spinach pie) is really delicious, as is the salmon. I took the advice of the waiter to try the crab cakes (a Mezzo specialty) and I had to stop myself from eating all of them. My boyfriend I sat outside, and we both agreed there is a really romantic ambience at night. This is not your ordinary Greek restaurant. They have weekly jazz, salsa, and acoustic entertainment upstairs in their gorgeous lounge, open 'til 1 or 2 AM. I have already dined there 3 times in the past month (once on a date, once for business, and once by myself!)-- I'm definitely a regular there! If you want delicious authentic food cultural entertainment, this is a great place to go. Perfect for so many different occasions!

Mezzo Mezzo didn't dazzle me the two times I've eaten there. I've ordered the Cold Pikilia, which is an app of assorted dips. At $11, I wasn't impressed with what was served. I've also had the Greek salad and the chicken kabobs, and both were nothing to write home about. What I DID like was the look feel of the place - very inviting with their wooden furniture and rustic decor. I may go back and try what others have recommended because I enjoyed the atmosphere.

I came here once with my boyfriend we ate the best food. I had the Aegean Chicken and I was completely in love with it. I took my parents friends there one night the same dish was pretty bad. None of us were happy with our meals, and so, I shall not return. Although I am intrigued by the belldancers.

Pretty crappy to me. The outdoor seating is dusty and dirty. There aren't any heatlamps and you have to wait until your entire party arrives and orders before you can have any type of nourishment other than tap water. Before I even sat down I was annoyed because the woman seated next to us wanted to take one of the chairs at my table and use it to hold her purse. Mike the server was nice but boy did it take forever to get served. I ordered the Grilled Salmon Salad and it was not good at all. The salmon was dry and tough and I it put me in a bad mood. I should've sent it back but Mike was so nice, I just couldn't. There was an awful draft where we were sitting so I never got comfortable and the giant tavern chairs are disproportionate to the tables and made it difficult for me to engage my roommates on our farewell dinner. So I sat there and sulked and tried to put on a happy face when the owner or manager or whoever he was gave us free baklava for dessert. ICK! I hate baklava. I've never been so displeased by food. And I never thought I would say this but ...I'd rather have McDonald's.

I think the name says it all. This place really falls short in my book. I've given it a try several times, especially since an old friend said it was his favorite place in the neighborhood a few years ago.My meals and those of my companions have been mediocre at best, if not disappointing. The ambience in the upper rooms is nice, and the place looks like a great place walking by, but I have never spoken to anyone in the neighborhood who has raved about this place. It's too bad, because it looks so good. It must have been the hostesses my friend liked so much.

I used to love this place before they changed their menu earlier on this year. How I miss their orange duck entree...Let's face it - they are a tad more expensive than many of the dining spots in the Ditmars locality. So they do need to offer dishes worth the cost. Previously, dining experiences here were absolutely fabulous. Now? Well, I've only gone there twice since the menu change, and I was disappointed both times. The meats aren't the same, the menu has become rather boring - if i want any of the items listed, i'd prefer to pop over to another establishment in the area. They claim the chef hasn't changed, but I'm really not sure. What happened? A near-$30 daily special steak that wasn't cooked the way i asked for, smothered grotesquely with a salty and bland mushroom sauce? Where did Mezzo Mezzo's delicate flavors go? The menu and seasoning used to be so special, and precise. This is a bitchy review, I know, but I just want to let Mezzo Mezzo know how much its past is missed.

Okay, not a bad place to start off with. Decor is lovely, wait staff incredibly kind and professional, almost overbearing at times. The bill was a little overwhelming, considering my salad, which was more than enough food, despite my server urging me to get the large, was $18.95 (damn daily special!!! Should have known to ask the price!) and it was, meh, good, but not amazing. They gave us free dessert, something with cream and coconut, had a little taste, it was sticky and sweet. The bathroom was disgusting. No TP, dripping sink, just a mess!A nice evening, but I dont plan on going again any time soon.

This place is fantastic. I went here once for my friend's birthday party and the food and service were phenomenal. I would go here once a week if this place was near my house in the East Village.I also went here recently for their Friday Happy Hour (4-8pm) as it includes a free buffet to accompany the drink specials! Free food + drink specials = perfect way to kick-off the weekend!

Is a flexible place, an assorted menu (including prices and food wise) and is somehow spacious for kids, and large groups, the service is effective and fast. I like to go on a weekday and enjoy the tranquility.

Okay... service is sucky. But the ridiculously incredible greek food is well worth it!!!! The crabcakes are to DIE for.... Delicious greek food, and they are extremely generous on portion size and especially the homemade feta. MMMMMMMM.So, if you don't mind the bad service, and need a greek fix... GO HERE.a caution: Do NOT have the sangria... taste a little rotten. Also, no good red wine choices

I am certainly no connoisseur of Greek food, but this place didn't impress me much.My wife and I went for lunch and were disappointed with the slow service. One waiter was apparently responsible for the entire restaurant (and this was around noon!). It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't all that great, either. The food was ok, but it definitely did not justify the price. If I'm going to pay dinner premiums for lunch time food, I would expect prompt service and awesome food. This restaurant failed to deliver.

Mezzo-Mezzo might mean "half and half," but this place gets the whole Hellenic taverna thing right. - Time Out New YorkValentines dinner at Mezzo Mezzo was cool, literally. Each of the five courses of the fixed price meal were delicious but some could have been served hotter. My guess is that a lot was pre-prepared for the menu and the holiday and was simply waiting under heat lamps - the service of each course was speedy and right about on time if a little early. The lobster bisque had enormous chunks of lobster meat and was quite tasty. I wished it were warmer. The salad was nothing special, but tasty and refreshing before the stuffed portobello mushroom caps. These had a crab/cornbread stuffing with some melted cheese on top and were very tasty. I expected the mushroom caps to be larger (just 2.5" across) but in a five-course meal, portion size is important and this was just right. The main course was "flounder stuffed with crab" which used the same cornbread/crab stuffing as the mushrooms. Very tasty, a little sweet, a little buttery. I found a few bones in the fish, but nothing outrageous. We also got mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes making it a very filling course. I brought home leftover fish, which was great for lunch the next day. Finally, baklava for dessert was flaky and sweet and delicious. The service was friendly and the manager/owner even came by to see how the meal was. He seemed like a good person to know (I saw him offer another table a free round of drinks). The decor was warm with log-cabin style exterior walls and heavy wooden tables and chairs. The stone/brick walls added to the look. Apparently the weekend scene is big too with bell dancers and what appeared to be a dance club upstairs.

Never go to the Mezzo Comedy Club in Astoria.I've gotten spammed like crazy from Matthew Taylor, the owner of this club. I sent 3 polite emails asking to be removed from the mailing list and was not. I then sent a rude one asking to be removed, and marked him as SPAM, he then emails me from a different email address and REFUSED until I "ask nicely." This is poor business etiquette, and very stupid on his part because word of mouth goes very very far in a small section like Astoria. He has also bothered me through Myspace and Facebook, and now his comedian friends are contacting me.So, I'm boycotting this place, and spreading the word that the guy who runs this place is a shmuck, with poor manners and no tact.

Very nice restaurant with good Greek food. What I love is how the owner is usually there and converses with all the patrons. Our first time, we mentioned we were new to the neighborhood and he offered desert on the house. The atmosphere was also very chill. Sunday brunch is especially good.

I went here twice, and both times, the service was extremely slow. I ordered the salmon dish and I started to think the staff went out fishing. The meal was just OK. The vibe is a cozy cabin feel, but mediocre experience overall.

The food was really great and laid back. The interior is nice, wooden and rustic, as I imagine Greece to be. Just get the appetizers. As with most greek food it's awesome but little munchies are kinda what keeps this place worthwhile. Also, might not be the best idea to sit outside as the street is fairly dirty and germs are everywhere. Way of the future!

I went here for lunch and ordered a bunch of small plates. The Saganaki was excellent, everything else was fine. The service was slow, but they comped us a dessert, and I liked the atmosphere. Overall, not the best I've had, but certainly not the the worst.

I have to say, I'm surprised by all the mixed reviews, because I've been to Mezzo Mezzo 3-4 times and have had nothing but good experiences there. However, I've never gone on a comedy club night, and if the manager is indeed spamming people who sign up for the mailing list, I can see how that could get quite annoying in a hurry.Anyway, the food has been very good every time I've been there. The Aegean chicken is a must-try, and I've had broiled whole fish (I think it was porgy) that was perfectly done. I can't remember which appetizers I've had, to be honest, but I do remember that they were great as well.

I used to live up the street from Mezzo Mezzo about six years ago, and I remember really liking it. I hadn't been since then, so my man meat took me for my birthday. I have always loved the atmosphere- it's dark and cozy and relaxing. Unfortunately the food and service weren't too hot and paled in comparison to my memories of it. I don't know if chefs have changed or if my standards have gone up since 2003, but the country Greek salad was kind of "meh", the lamb chops were fatty, and the roasted potatoes were nothing to write home about. I tried the bf's lobster ravioli, which was sadly so overpowered by tomato sauce it was impossible to detect any lobster. At one point my manfriend requested a refill of his soda, and it was about ten minutes before it came out to the table. I ordered galaktoboureko for dessert with a cup of decaf coffee. The waiter came out to tell me that there was only flavored decaf which was fine-but he failed to tell me that he would have to make a fresh pot. I was annoyed because I specifically wanted something warm to drink with my pastry. I appreciate that the waiter went to the lengths of making the coffee, but I wish he had communicated better so I could have told him not to bother. The galaktoboureko itself was flat-out disgusting. The custard looked like cottage cheese, and the filo was soaked in far too much honey and cinnamon. I've had far worse restaurant experiences, but Mezzo Mezzo left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. Oh- and where the hell are there hookahs?? That might get me to go back...**UPDATE** After reading this review I received a message from Mezzo apologizing for my experience, and offering a gift certificate. I probably won't take them up on it, but have to say I really appreciate the offer. I consider it good business, and most importantly good customer service so I've added a third star to reflect that.

Wanted to like this place. Really , really wanted to like this place. The food was just kinda... eh. Appetizers, entrees, desserts; all boring and bland as hell. The only thing that came at all close to being considered "good" was their fish, but for the same price you could get a truly outstanding meal at Taverna Kylclades. The service was good, atleast.

Came the day of New Year's Eve. I was walking around Astoria with a friend and well, she didn't want diner food that was right across the street. (That should be a thread: Why can't I find a female who likes diner food as much as me?) In any case, the prices were a little higher than I was happy with, but the food was totally worth it. I haven't enjoyed Greek food like that since Europe. The place was cavernous and dark which felt uncomfortable since it was the middle of the day when I went, and the service was, well, what service there was wasn't stellar. My advice: Listen to Adam B. Go for the appetizers, but I have an addition: go only if you have time because the service seems to like to take theirs.

My first time to Queens for anything other than Shea Stadium or the airport brought me to this place. It looks like a cavernous log cabin inside (never been to Greece, so not sure if this is what it looks like). The staff are Greek so that eases the mind about authenticity. I went on New Year's Day and there were some technical difficulties (long waits for food, no heat at times, etc.) but it didn't bother me because they were working hard on a holiday.I don't remember my entree, but i do remember the best Baklava ever!!!! It was only like $3 bucks and enough for 2 people.I would return here, but not go all the way to Queens just to visit it.

Apparently it was a problem that I chose to have a salmon salad for dinner because I wasn't too hungry. The salad was tasteless btw, and the fish was dry. The waiter would not leave me alone about it, he was being really annoying asking me "Are you sure? You don't look like you're eating much. Don't you want anything else?" I almost felt like he was attacking me. Anyway, my friend had some kind of stuffed ravioli and it was pretty alright. What bothered me a little is that I felt that the tables/sugar bowls are not properly kept clean. My chair was dusty and there were TWO SPIDERS hanging out in the sugar bowl. Way to make my experience even more memorable :).

My friend and I strolled there for dinner and we sat outside since it was such a beautiful night. Next to us sat a loud obnoxious group that played their own music from their Ipod?!!-- We told the waiter and while he agreed with us and was nice about it, nothing was said to them. As appetizers we ordered mussels which were too young and very small plus the wine sauce was sour and the grilled octopus served as a very tiny dish. We decided no to continue with a main entree and instead with ordered a large Greek salad to share which left a lot to be desired . NEVER AGAIN

For some reason they don't advertise that Mezzo Mezzo is a hookah lounge (it isn't listed on their website) but they have a wonderful selection of fresh fruit hookahs. We had 3 hookahs (melon, apple, and rose), all with fresh pineapple. They do a pretty good job of keeping hot coals on.All of the food that we tried here is good try the grilled chunks of hard cheese... I can't find the name of it as their online menu is incomplete but they'll know what you're talking about. AMAZING!-1 for bad service. Apparently this is par for the course with some of the greek restaurants in Astoria, but it was the only real detracting aspect of the night.
