there's a thing at the top of the description page that says NO ALCOHOL!--not so!-change it!-full bar -great drinks--jack black and coke comes with a 12 ounce can and ice in a bucket--super rib eye steak if you're lambed out-great salads--enjoy!

Get your grill on baby, this place fires it up! Chicken chops, Lebn, THE BREAD!! Seriously you could throw a dart at the menu and be completely psyched. Shepherd salad w/feta is a must have. The Fish is always good as well. The Service is what you'd expect it to be.

Good food, but twice I have been here that they were 'out of' the chicken gyro. The atmosphere is nice and bustling, and the 'outside' seating refreshing on a summer afternoon. You'll get a seat quickly in any case. Service is ok; sometimes the waiters/waitresses can't be bothered. Sometimes you get bread, sometimes not. The cucumber sauce used to be in glass bottles, now it's in those small plastic cups and no matter what sauce you are supposed to get with specific dishes, that's the one you get. Appetizers are pretty high; do you really want to pay that much for hummus? There are a lot of main courses, and you'll get a huge portion of that. 2 stars seems low, 3 a little high.

Great food but the service was lacking! Could have been because my visit there was at 10pm on a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty - but still. If nothing other than for their Cream of Mushroom Soup and the best Shepherd Salad this side of Brooklyn, it's worth a trip despite the slow wait staff. Bonus- it's reasonably priced.

one recommendation:do not come here on a hot summer day. you will melt in there! hahai used to come here late nights after some hookah across the street. you would see club kids and teeny boppers stopping by for some grub at 11pm. the gyros are superb! i'm always taking my food to go- but my friends and i end up eating in front of Sahara's anyway. lol. it's definitely not close by the city or what not... but gravesend locals and alike are fond of this establishment. i don't even like or eat lamb- but someone stuffed it in my mouth before i realized what it was... and i liked it. i feel so guilty for saying that! lol.

Ok, yes...it is a trek. And there's probably no other reason to come out to this part of Brooklyn unless you're shopping in Lester's and don't feel like going to the UES. But if you are out here you MUST MUST MUST stop at Sahara. I remember this place when it first opened way back in the day and was a tiny storefont. Now it takes up nearly half the block and has only grown more fabulous. Single handedly the best sheperd salad with unbelievably creamy feta. Sigura Boregi - (filo rolls stuffed with feta and fried crisp) are to die for.  And the most luscious hummus you've ever had. The prices can't be beat either.  A late night dinner for 3 friends ran us about $15 each and thats with leftovers for everyone. So if you happen to find yourself out in the middle of Coney Island Avenue, head on over to Sahara for a gastronomic experience not matched anywhere else!

If you're headed to or from Coney Island, this is definitely worth the stop on the Q at Avenue U. I highly recommend both the cold appetizer plate and the mixed grill.

This place started from a whole in the wall 20 years ago to taking half a block, but the food has gotten very pricey and not as good. yes, the outdoor garden, which has an awning in case of rain is a nice touch, but i does not justify a $100 bill for two people for simple dinner with a glass of wine. i recommend ordering and taking to go. meals take minutes to get ready. their gyro is i am guessing, the number one seller, because if that's what you order, it will be ready in a minute.

The first time I had sahara was when it first opened up.  The food was great and the prices were cheap.  I kept going back there becuase I loved all there dishes.  After a couple years they expanded and I think they changed owners and from there it went down hill.  The food was not as good any more and the prices went up.  I don't like it anymore I changed to a new turkish restaurant called taci's beyti.

The food at Sahara is not what it used to be before the hype.  I love Turkish food but Middle Eastern food is the same and I've found Steinway St. in Astoria to be more convenient.  I admit I have driven all the way from the Bronx for the Adema Kabab but since this place is not Halal I probably won't be going anytime soon.  Happy eating!

I went to Sahara a long, long time ago when I was like 8 years old and used to live in Brooklyn.  I revisited a couple of times over the years and they have the best, most tender, juicy gyros I have ever had anywhere.  They have outdoor seating in the summer (revisited in July) and it is always busy but never a long wait!  I really love going back to this place, I guess it brings back lots of memories :)

I've been going to Sahara's for a few years and it is consistently excellent! Wonderful Turkish cuisine. The bread comes fresh and hot to the table...make sure to order some Lebne to dip your bread in (a yogurt dip with walnuts). The Iskender kebab is always good...meat on fried pita with yogurt and a yummy tomato sauce...trust me it's delish. Adana Kebab is fantastic too and also the mixed grill...actually I don't think I've ever ordered anything that wasn't fabulous if not very very good. And for a sweet bite at the end, definitely save room for some Baklava!

Alright I can't comment on the service, since one of my co-workers was nice enough to take everyone's order and bring it back for lunch one day.  I had the chicken gyro which I thought was pretty good.  The chicken was cooked just right and the sauce was pretty good.  All my co-workers liked their lunch and smelled good.  One of these days I'll go there for a sit down dinner and update my review.

When you got it flaunt it, and thats what Sahara does . Since I first got to know this place way back probably still as a fetus in brooklyn this place has grown from a one dining room establishment with a a large takeout/delivery counter in front to a multi-level multiple dining room establishment taking up half the block with an outdoor garden to boot.Theyre food is great , theyre open late, and are fast, reliable, and casual. They're good for lunch, dinner, midnight , afterhours, takeout/delivery, and parties. Come on an empty stomachand be prepeared to eat because the portions are big and you'll wnat most of it for yourself. My alomsot always ritualistic order at Sahara includes:shepherds salad w/ fetalentil soup (best I've ever had)sigara boregihumuus babaganoush w/ their complimentary always hot, delicious, crispy but soft on the inside almost good on its own pita breadadana yogurt kebab-adana kebab lying on top of cripsy toasted pita chips smothered in yogurt and hot sauceturkish teamixed plate of baklavaDont miss out on their mixed grill, falafels, and pita sandwiches eitherand dont let the sometimes disinterested waiters annoy you, they know like you know that its not about them its about the food whcih will be coming out shortly.

I noticed that there are folks who love Sahara, or hate Sahara, with almost nothing in between.  Well, I absolutely hate it.  We ate in the restaurant a few times (not our own desire, were invited to someone's party) and had it once as a take-out, again, host's choice.  Both times, the food was very bland,  really nothing special.  The inside of the restaurant is usually very crowded, people are sitting on top of each other, it's very loud because everyone talks at the same time.  To sum it up, I have never gone or ordered from the place on my own accord, only when I was forced to:-)

I love Sahara's!! It's convenient, quick, always goood and above all open late. My fave is their lamb... adana, beyti, chops, etc. Mmmm = P ... For a complete meaI I always start out with the shepherd salad and hummus for apps, LAMB platter for my main, then finish it off with turkish tea and brown top pudding for dessert. All of that will leave you in heavenly FULL blisss. The main dishes also come in small portions (one skewer instead of two) for you lite ladies. FYI: There'a a hookah bar across the street (if your feeling like a fat ass and need some assistance in exhaling, with flavor).

whenever i hear that someone is willing to travel an hour or more to go eat somewhere, now that catches my attention.  i know this place is worth checking out.  i know that person takes food seriously.  i know because i definitely would do the same.  so when my turkish friend told me that he drives all the way from the north shore of long island to eat a gyro in the other end of brooklyn, that caught my attention.  i said i can't believe you drive so far just to eat a gyro.  he says its not just a gyro, its the best gyro in new york.  i'm born and raised turkish and i am very picky about turkish food.so i was in brooklyn and not far from this place, decided to try lunch.  shared some kababs and gyros.  wow that was the best gyro i've ever had.  the chef told me they season the meat for hours then pack 150 pounds of meat onto that huge skewer and let the meat cook very slowly.  what ever they do, the meat is just right.  it was seasoned perfectly, it was tender, moist, and was completely grease free!  where else in new york can you find a gyro that isn't dripping with grease?  the seasoning for the kababs were amazing, making the meat so flavorful but i thought the meat itself was slightly on the dry side.i can't wait to bring my other buddy here next time to try the fish kebabs and grilled vegetables, which looked absolutely amazing hot off the charcoal grill.

I love this place. When it comes to pricing per person-hey, you can eat for $15-$20-$30 per person or even more! Do not use this criteria alone. I suggest to split a few different dishes between several people plus a salad(it is huge),add drinks and next time you'll know what to order. Absolutely recommend to try their outdoor dining and a milk pudding for desert.. Unfortunately, parking is a problem most of the time. With the capacity like this-it is time for their own parking lot.If you come at the end of the day-eggplant spread tends to run on the sour side!

The Sahara is good...not greatI ordered the chicken kabob the first time with a side of rice and veggies. I  liked it and felt like I would order from them againand I did...I ordered two gyros...one beef and one chicken...so good with the cucumber dressing. Comes with a side of fries which were not so good. Quick delivery time of under 30 minutes...check it out since its guilty pleasure food at a reasonable price.

Consistently the best Turkish and Mid-East kebab house in NYC - and possibly on the east coast.  The simple grilled chicken kebab and hummus is a harmony on the palate. This is where every sensible cabbie in Brooklyn eats - and now with the large dining room a family meal here is possible and pleasurable.  It is a bargain!  (Plus they deliver within reason...)he hot fresh-baked pita is one of life's simple pleasures.  It is one of the only tings I miss about Gravesend Bklyn.

My husband (american) and i (turkish) walked in and right away i heard some waiters talk negative about us as a couple of course in turkish not expecting me to understand!i ordered babaghonush and it was sour as it was bad. the sigara borek was very good and the fish and meat dishes were okay. but the salad wasnt fresh and left in the dressing for who knows how long. at the end i got a old turkish tea served with sugar packs and a straw ?! and when i wanted to order a platter to go with the salad on the side the guy behind the register acted like he didnt understand what that means! untill i spoke turkish which made everything much easier! over all poor service and nothing outstanding by the way they do bigger occasions like weddings and stuff

I came here for the first time Friday night with a friend, who recommended the food here.We were seated promptly and we didn't put our orders in right away.  The waitstaff seemed to be a little peeved that we didn't put our order in as soon as we walked in the door.  We finally ordered a bunch of appetizers, and they came out really fast, along with fresh baked bread (that needed some salt).  He ordered his main meal, which was a chicken dish, but I was completely satisfied with my appetizers. We got baba ganoush (not really great), shepherd salad (completely awesome), dolmas (the best I've ever had) and hummus (also the best I've ever had).  He got a chicken kabob dish, with rice and veggies as well.We ate until we stuffed ourselves stupid, but when it came time to get the check, the waitstaff was too busy chatting with one another to bother.  He asked 3 separate times for our check, and only once he got up to physically ask the waitress again, did she finally bring it to him.I think I'd get takeout from here the next time.

This is by far the best Turkish food I've tasted in New York City. I have been coming here for years and the food has tasted the same: awesome. Though the waitstaff is a bit slow on the service, you will be in the love with them by the time they come.I am often famished when I go to Sahara. That happens because I plan to eat nothing before I go during the day and when I get there...it's a free reign pig-out fest. The bread (which comes whether you like it or not) is always fresh and though the staff sometimes neglects to bring the sauces that come with the bread (it used to always be available at tables) that's fine, because you can ask. Great orders you won't regret:-Falafel-Sigara Boregi-Sahara Kibbeh-Humus-Pan Fried Eggplant-Shepard's Salad with Feta Cheese-Gyro-Adana Kebab-Beyti Kebab-Sahara Chicken Adana with YogurtSorry vegetarians but I am a carnivore. Though they do have vegetarian-friendly dishes, their meat can turn you the other way. I especially love the way their meat's juices drip onto the rice. Phenomenal.

All hail the sultan!I don't care what my friends say, I think this is the best Turkish in Sheepshead.  The reasons are large and small, and the list is long.  The kabobs are always good.  The mixed grill is even better.  The chicken thighs are surprisingly awesome.  The swordfish.  The grape leaves.  The lentil soup! Then there are the most simple items that whoop the most ass.  The RICE is seriously better than any other rice I've had at comparably great restaurants (see:  Tacis Beyti or the totally incognito Memo).  Same for the BREAD (not the pita, the BREAD).  The shepherd salad, which theoretically should be the same wherever you go, just somehow tastes a little fresher to me at Sahara. There's a good chance that I've been brainwashed, but that's just a risk you'll have to be willing to take listening to me.

What do you mean you can't make me a drink? You'll bring me vodka in a glass and seltzer in a can, but you can't mix the two? Argh. The hummus is good, the bread is good and so is the rice. My Adana kebab was anticlimactic and I was hoping for the opposite! It was kind of dry, and the yogurt sauce it came on wasn't balancing out the spicy. Basically, I've had much better lamb other places.Everyone around me was eating chicken though, so maybe that's what I should have been having? Won't be going out of my way to come back.

I've been going to Sahara since I was a young girl, and it has yet to let me down...I went for some take-out this past chilly weekend after not having been in years, and the place, the service, the food, still the same and still wonderlicious!!  I can't say much for dining in as I haven't done so in a while...and I do have to say my hummus was a little too creamy, being half Egyptian, we do like our hummus a little less on the creamy side...but I know that usually the Turkish make it the opposite way...heres my synopsis...Tabouleh = fantastic, slightly magical maybeAdana = aDonna favorite :)~Baklava = tickled its way straight from my lips to my hips, smiling end to end as usualyummy yummy def check it out if you haven't yet done so :)

ordered the adana kabob and it was pretty good. comes with rice, lettuce and this really long pepper that becomes really spicy as you eat it. the lamb was flavorful, but i still had to cover it with the yogurt sauce. i'm wondering if this dish would've tasted even better with the fried pita bread and hot yogurt. i also tried some lamb saute and it wasn't that great. the tomato sauce overpowered the lamb. anyway, the highlight of this place was their bread. man was their bread delicious. it was hot and crusty on the outside and really warm and soft on the inside. only if they served it with sticks of butter, i would've been a really happy camper.

I love this place. Great Turkish food and totally Brooklyn. The food is healthy, very good, and thus perfect for maintaining the type of nice beefed up body that girls from Monmouth State drop their drawers for all summer long on the jersey shore. Additionally, the atmosphere at this place is great . . . if you want to feel like your in a scene from the Sopranos (Russian style) . . .this is your spot. In fact, there are so many Russians at this place that I have a sneaking suspicion that if you order in Russian you actually get a 25% discount. The rest of the clientele is a combination of something you might find in a movie such as Out For Justice. This is my type of place.

Stop #4 on Famous Fat Dave's food tour: Sahara. Most people going to Sahara are there for its famous shawarma. Dave wanted to take us here for another reason, which was oddly enough NOT meat related. And that reason was their salad. Dave calls their Shepherd Salad the best salad ever. He may just be right.I don't really remember the specifics of the salad that well other than there's a heap of lightly dressed diced tomatoes and cucumbers. What I DO remember is the Turkish feta that's shaved over the top. Compared to the Greek crumbly kind, the creamy Turkish feta makes all the difference because there's better cheese distribution - EVERY bite is a feta bite. PLUS, with each bite of salad the creamy feta sort of melts in your mouth. It comes with a piece of house Turkish bread. Dave also scored for us a few shavings of beef gyro to sample which were good. But it was all about the salad. And who can resist their slogan, lit up over the front door, "Let's MEAT at Sahara."
