Empire Food Reviews

I was a bit disappointed by Empire Food. I was hoping it would be the British Candy mecca I have been searching for since I move here. They do carry some imported candy- Aero Bars, Turkish Delight, Flakes. I was really looking for Cadbury Crunchies (I know, I know, so picky) which they don't carry. Also, it was at least 85 degrees in there, all the candy was melty. Blarg. I guess I have to take what I can get.

This cool little bodega on South Street boasts in a sign in their window IRISH FOOD and IRISH SWEETS. I went in there with the paddy once, and we were like "what do you know from Irish Food" as the place was totally run by some latino kids. It was well laid back though, with a cat wondering around. Their answer btw, was that they used to live in Yonkers in an Irish Neighborhood and thought it'd be a good idea to sell the food. By Irish Food of course, it's mostly British, but whatevs. I spent mad money in there one day buying some white pudding, biccies, pickles, HP Sauce, Mushy Peas, and plus they've got the litre bottles of Lucozade which is totally how I roll. I'd go back if I ever needed some Goya supplies or American food too, because the people here are just chill, and I love that they decided to go into this niche market despite the fact they're not British or Irish. Love it

Upon first glance it looks like your typical Convienence store, and it doesn't really do much to go beyond it. Deli counter in the back, plenty of junk food, get your paper and a pack of smokes if you crave them and your good to go.It is pretty bad ass that they have a section devoted to British items. As Chrissy R. noted you can pick up an abundance of Lucozade, HP Sauce, and other treasures that are pretty rare for a store like here. But calling it IRISH Food and IRISH Sweets is pretty misleading since most of the foods are far from Irish tradition. As a gent who's 75% Irish that was craving some Irish Potatoes and McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal this place nearly had me crying :(Despite the sacrilege it is a pretty solid convience store that goes a bit above most typical convience stores. And the window displaying Hookahs definitely has me most curious.
