What a hole! Or perhaps dungeon is a better word. You need night vision equipment to see inside the place. Until recently there was no cover charge but now it's $5 to get in. According to the girl at the door, the owner went somewhere else and had to pay a cover, so he decided that he was going to join the rest of the moron bar owners and charge one too. Great time to do so, in this wonderful economy. I'll be avoiding Mosaic like the plague.

Mosaic is a very hip but relaxed lounge.  Inside you'll find a middle-eastern type theme: candles, dark woods, stuffed couches/seating and ornate lighting fixtures.  They typically groove to some international lounge type music (think Brasilian, techno) that's played at just the right volume.  They've also got a small patio area where you can watch people and trains pass by.  Mosaic attracts some well-dressed stylish people, including the barstaff.  Some people may find Mosaic a bit pretentious but I like the place.  It's a bit pricey and the bar staff could do a better job doling out drinks but it's still quite good.  Very similar to lounges you'd find in San Francisco, a bit cool, a bit hot and overall a good place to grab a cocktail and hang out for a bit...

I've been here a several times and I've never been disappointed. The Moroccan motif provides for an intimate, relaxed environment. The wine selection is great. The music was fantastic. The crowd was upscale but unpretentious. They even have a bellydancer on occasion. Reminds me of some of the lounges I frequented in NYC.

I've been wanting to write about this place for sometime and felt the need not to-- you know I wanted to protect it or something but lord knows--how many people actually use this site? I think the few of us who post are the few of us who know..so let me let you in on a little secret: Mosaic is hands down my favorite spot in RDU. This is a TRUE big city style lounge that people "in the know" go to. Solas is most certainly the look of a glitzy big city spot but the people who go there try way too hard to be noticed and the cheese factor becomes undeniable. Mosaic though reminds me of Nikita's in Dallas and far too many hip small lounges in NYC.It's hidden for one thing. I've moved back for months and literally only found it by accident 1st time and then had the hardest time finding it second and third time. Now I know but, it's on a side street and is so non-descript that I'm sure countless people have walked by it. One you get in--it's got very low lighting, stone interior with a black, brown and satin red motif. It's got a Moraccan theme (I hadn't noticed but a girl I dated told me) and likewise, it's got 4 very small sections. One is immediately to your right as you descend into the spot and is mostly for dancing (complete with DJ). Followed by the bar immediately next to it, another smaller sitting area and then upstairs on your left is a small lounge spot that reminds me of a hookah lounge--without the hookah.Let me say upfront--when it does get crowded--if you're claustrophobic then it might not be for you with it's low ceilings. That said, if you enjoy interesting people, cool world music, lounging on nice sofas, fantastic international wines and just a trendy/ cool. I think it's perfect for dates or for socializing. Parking sucks unless you use a garage and it's no smoking (which is A+++ for me)!One last thing: I think there's a difference with pretentious as a term--Solas imo has pretentious people--these are "sophisticates" who would rather spend their rent money to get into a place, buy drinks and then try and act wealthy and superior---if actual people who are wealthy and/or are independent/creative and undaunted by those who are wealthy or whatever do not bother you then Mosaic is your crowd. I have seen people in dusty jeans with ratty tennis shoes in Mosaic who are actual Opera singers and I've seen the sexy silk dress on a woman who is a visiting international in NC. Conversely other places in RDU I've gone I've seen guys in business suits or women wearing very sexy gowns who might work at McDonalds and will turn their heads up as if everyone is scum or not pretty enough or financially secure enough--lol--to me one is pretentious and one is not, you decide.

Cool place to hang out.  As the other folks who've reviewed have pointed out - this place is about the ambiance.  Good drinks - check, good music - check, sweet/mod decor - check.  If there's one thing I can't stand it's places that reek of pretentiousness and this place does not.  It's got kind of a big city vibe with a laid back Raleigh attitude.I'm just as big a fan of a good sports bar as I am of a place like Mosaic.  Really just as long as the place keeps it real and doesn't try to be something it's not - it's a place I'll go to again and again.  You should try Mosaic - I think you'll like it.
