India Pavilion Restaurant Reviews
by Ligaya T.
High five, good Indian! It seems that the ratings are all over the place because of poor quality of the lunch buffet. Haven't been, but let me tell ya, my saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were the bomb d. Why? Cuz they've got the cream! Literally. There dishes are smooth textured but still chock full of flavor. The lassi was even a bit too potent for my sensitive tastes. I can't stand cheesy Indian art (or Japanese for that matter) so the bright murals with beguilingly smiling women baring their bellies in here make me want to scream. Dining partner is important. Look.at.face.They got us in and out quickly; pretty sizeable place so you shouldn't have to wait long. Service was cordial. But mint chutney for those yummy samosas? Well, it was $1 and it just shouldn't be.

I'm surprised by the good reviews this place has got as I found it quite disgusting in both food and service. Granted, it is almost impossible to find an even mediocre Indian in the USA after being spoilt by Britain's second cuisine but even beyond that I found this place quite terrible. My take-out experiences have been okayish - ok rice, good naans and bland uninspired attempts at the Indian classics like Tikka chicken and lamb Rogan Josh. But eating in was a much worse experience - rude staff (including one who refused to acknowledge us even after we got up and asked him directly), dirty plates and a filthy toilet that I personally felt impelled to tidy up myself before my parents (who I was dining with) would later use it. Honestly

8 bucks (incl. tip) gets you stuffed at the lunch buffet. The buffet has enough options. Good luck finding the chicken swimming in the soup of tikka masala sauce. The sauce is clearly the cheapest part of every dish in this buffet. I would totally give them another star if they had masala tea included.OK indian food. OK lunch buffet value. OK, I'll go with you.

I love their lunch buffet. It always has a lot of good options and tasty food. And, it's cheap! The only downfall is that the service isn't great if you want something other than water to drink. Took about 15 min to get a soda last time we were there.... but I almost think they went out to the store to buy it.But for the food and the price, you can't beat it!

Such a great deal -- for $23.95, the Veggie Lovers House Dinner for Two includes two soups, four (yes, four!) set entrees (all delicious), rice, poori or paratha, tea or coffee, and desserts of your choice. The non-vegetarian couple that we had dinner with ordered the Meat Lovers Dinner for Two, so everyone was happy. Rare is the restaurant that pleases both carnivores and herbivores. When the servers pulled up another table next to ours, our friend wondered aloud, "Is another couple joining us for dinner?" Actually, another table was necessary to hold the smörgsbord of food on the way! On the descent to food coma by the time the gulab jamun arrived, we did not even notice that the tea/coffee section of our meal was somehow skipped over, not that we had the room for it. Otherwise, service was very attentive and we'll definitely be back!

Best damn naan in Boston. I've become something of a naan connoisseur. I am proud to say that I have sampled most naan in the Boston metro area, and India Pavillion, your fluffy, never-greasy, never-burnt, always flavorful, plate-sized little discs of love take the cake. Take the carb. Plus, you get unlimited naan during the lunch buffet, as compared to stingier Indian places that drop a basket of two pieces of bread on your table, and you're left mopping up the remnants of your meal with a spoon, and your tears.Their buffet is similarly lovely. Small, yes, but they actually put the "paneer" in "saag paneer." Their veggie pakoras are nice, not swimming in grease. They don't mix it up too much, which is fine, I'm a traditionalist, and I want my buffet consistent, fresh, and tasty. Service has always been fine. They're quick to refill your water glass. Plus you can get a delicious lunch for under $8, less than what you would pay at McD's for their less-than-holy microwaved beef.

I went alone for a late dinner. The service was good (water glass stayed full) and the food came out very quickly. The only exceptional dish was the garlic nan, which had quite a bit of garlic (somewhere between one large clove and two medium ones, sliced thinly).

Excellent - inexpensive, delicious chicken curry and breads. I used to live down the street from this place and the bf and I loved going here. I really liked the bread with peas and potatoes in it (aloo? something? sorry :/)LOVE IT!

:lunch buffet:pakoras, saag paneer, tandori chicken, ohh yes. wasn't the best naan i've ever had, but let's face it, i know like nothing about indian food. the chicken was moist and tender, the creamed spinachy stuff was yummy, and for $7.95, grabbing all you can eat is a pretty good deal.looked like you could opt to stuff a styrofoam take out container for the to go option as well.

Great deal you get a whole meal for about 12-15 with soup and a desert!!! Great service and atmosphere. This by far is definetly on my top list of indian food!!! Banging ass food!!!

Yum!Looks like the bad reviews here are primarily due to the buffet. Luckily we walked in shortly after the buffet ended. Wandering in off the street after some difficult prom shopping we were very hungry. It was awkward when we first came in, the server not really speaking to us waved us to a table and turned to walk away. It was a little strange as the only other occupied table was apparently the rest of the staff and it was dead quiet. Soon enough a couple walked in and our conversation didn't stand out so much in the empty dining area. The menu is simple and easy to understand. I know very few Indian dishes so I like to explore new things. Luckily for $24 you can order a house dinner for two. We got the veggie lovers, of course, and it is an insane amount of food. You get two soups, four dishes, rice, bread, desert, and coffee. Get this, it's the same price as (less than in some cases!) as a one dish complete meal. The coconut soup is amazing, so simple and sweet. It's an unexpected treat to start off what was one of the best Indian meals I've ever had. We ate and ate and then ate some more, everything was so good it was hard to stop. I enjoyed all I tasted. The only strange part was the "carrot cake". Cake it was not. Nor did it contain the mentioned raisins. It was more of a ground carrot and...sweet potato(?)...concoction. Not bad, just not what I was expecting. Especially since it was hot. It's ok though, since we ate SO MUCH FOOD. This was such a nice little surprise having just wandered in off the street. I'll be coming back for sure.

After working up an appetite shopping for next week's 80s/90s prom (for which, incidentally, I found the best sequined aqua taffeta ballgown-pantsuit thing in the history of man), my roommate and I stumbled into this charming little joint. The service was a bit spotty to begin with. I actually wondered briefly if they were trying to close for the day based on the way the server reacted to us. They weren't closing, though; I think maybe he was just stunned and confused by the rays of pure light and love emanating from the bag that contained the aforementioned pantsuit.Anyway. We decided to do the vegetarian dinner for two, which was a perfect choice. Oh my lord, there was a lot of food involved. We had regular naan, some sort of puffy fried naan(!), two soups (we chose coconut and mulligatawny, both awesome), four different and delectable vegetarian entrees (including one with peas and paneer that made me want to cry it was so good), and dessert. Everything was delicious--even the "carrot" "cake" Roomie got, which didn't seem to contain either carrots or cake. I chose the mango ice cream, which was lovely, although I wasn't able to finish it because...well, did you see all the other food I just listed? The best part? We paid less than $30 altogether. The food was incredible and affordable. I will definitely go back--except this time I will ask for half of my portion to go so that I don't have to be removed from the restaurant by crane.

Probably the best Indian restaurant in the central square area. The non-vegetarian Thali for 1 is excellent (and easily enough for 2-3). The chicken tikka masala is solid, and the lamb saag is tasty. Love the rice pudding. The lentil soup is a little watery.

Yummmm right next to Falafel Palace! Original friendly cheap and delicious!

I'm always up for trying new Indian restaurants, so this was tonight's choice.I started with the coconut soup because I had read here it was so good. It was alright? Admittedly, I'm not a huge coconut fan, but it still seemed really sweet for an appetizer. The malai kofta, which was pretty solid. Nothing fantastic. The spices were a little tame. Also, the amount of nan I got was a bit pathetic. I was finished with it before I got halfway through my food. The service was a bit slow, so we didn't have a chance for dessert before we had to go. They were really great about dropping the price, though, because we had originally ordered the dinners but didn't get around to dessert. It's surprisingly inexpensive, though, so if you're looking for cheap Indian that won't surprise you with its fabulosity, this is a fine choice. Just don't go out of your way.

I love this place each and every time I go there. It's just not my favorite for some reason but I will say it's my 2nd favorite. I can't put my finger on what would bring it over the top and be my favorite... Maybe location? Central Square is not bad but it's not pretty.Anyway, I went here Saturday 2/7 for the weekend buffet. The Chicken Tikka Masala, Onion Chutney, Naan, Pakoras, and service were wonderful. The price is good too.Another thing, on River Street (ask if you don't know where that is) just down the street from the restaurant is an Indian grocery store owned and operated by the same people who own Indian Pavillion. I adore this shopt and have found many bargains there in terms of frozen naan and of course spices which you will find up the stairs and in the back. This place also has a grilling and food area where you can order Pakoras and Samosas (among many other yummy items). You can also order something like Chicken Korma to go and they'll make it from scratch right in front of you. Superb!
by Nika T.
They have a great lunch buffet, but they also have a complete and yummy menu to order from. Service isn't as warm and friendly as my favorite indian place, but the great food brings us back. They totally turned me into a Veggie Pakora lover! Pros:Fun location with lots of shops around to browseGreat lunch buffetDelicious foodCons:Staff could be a bit friendlier
by Tim T.
There's nothing like a good old vindaloo after an days drinking and there's not many places better than here to get exactly that. I've lots of English and Irish mates who like to spend Saturday's drinking, then in true English style we usually hit up this curry house for some soakage. I'm not sure what else to say in this review, a curry house is a curry house but the owners and staff here are friendly (even when you've had a wee bit too much to drink beforehand). They've only one toilet so that kinda sucks but other than that, this place is not bad at all.

First off the service was AWFUL and the silverware and glasses were dirty....BUT the food was decent. Things came out at random times, but everything was hot and had a nice flavor. I think if I ever wanted food from Indian Pavilion again, I would order out. Oh and DON'T GET DESSERT!
by Lily C.
india pavilion is the first indian restaurant i went to when i moved to boston five years ago. their heavenly samosas and delicious saag took my breath away - it was love at first bite! i have been to a number of other indian restaurants in boston and cambridge, but keep coming back here. they have a lunch buffet and an a la carte menu with a wide selection of appetizers, entrees, and deserts. service is quick and the prices are more than reasonable. if I could, i would eat here every day of the week!
by Muckenfuss V.
A wonderful institution. A complete meal with soup, main dish, rice, and postprandial dessert and tea is $12 (add $2 for most lamb dishes). None of it will knock your socks off (that carrot cake dessert is pretty bad), but you'd be hard pressed to make the food for double that price. I have gotten fond of that coconut soup, even though the first time it seemed as though somebody poured boiling water over a bag of flaked coconut. The servers are wonderful; the dude with the 'stache remembers us every time.
by Drew S.
I'm usually pretty picky about Indian food; growing up, my home town's main drag was a cornucopia of Indian restaurants and groceries, so we always had good choices around, and you got used to good food. So when a friend said "hey, let's hit up Indian Pavilion", I was cautious; good Indian is great, bad Indian is, well, an experience. And not the good kind of experience. But, being adventurous(and with nothing to do before work), we hit it up for the lunch buffet. It was good; the naan was delicious, chicken was well cooked and well spiced, and the servers were unobtrusive, swinging by to fill waters when they were low(granted, I can't really comment too much on the servers, since the buffet was obviously self-serve). I've been back a few times since, and I've yet to be dissatisfied with the joint.

Decent is the best way to describe this place. The atmosphere, the food, the portions, the price - all constitute decent. The only thing standing out was perhaps the service, as the woman who waited on us was very friendly and attentive. I'm not from Boston, but I'm assuming there's better Indian fare to be had by all.
by Ken C.
Only been there once, and it was solid. Reasonably priced, and the coconut soup was so good, this will probably be my go-to place in Central for Indian food just so I can get the soup again!

On many occasions, we've arrived in Central Square and smelled the delicious aromas of India Pavilion. So while running errands recently, we were finally able to give it a try.We were a few minutes from the close of the buffet, so we ordered from the menu. They were out of soup, so we couldn't get the combination meals. We ordered a lamb dish and a veggie dish. Both were flavorful and perfectly adequate. The samosa were just fine.If you're in the area, it's not a bad choice for a meal.

This restaurant and Falafel Palace are among the top 10 reasons I love living in Central Square. The food here is fantastic and incredibly reasonable for Indian. Whether eating in or getting take out, I have never had a bad meal. The staff is very friendly. The one slight issue I have is that they CANNOT pronounce my name. "Betsy" is pretty much impossible to pronounce for non-English speakers, but even though I repeat my name numerous times when I call for take-out, my receipt has said everything from "Bepsi" to "Jessie." Oh well, it keeps things interesting. They could call me Princess Consuela Banana Hammock (yeah, I made a "Friends" reference, I'm kind of a nerd) and I would still be a loyal customer.
by Emily S.
Well...they should do a better job of describing what goes into the food on the menu because they failed to list cashews on this one thing my friend ate and she's allergic to cashews and she went and threw up all over their bathroom. It does say on the menu "please tell us if you have any allergies" and she didn't...but come on, EVERYBODY is allergic to nuts.Vomit aside, my favorite sit-down Indian joint. The food is tasty and the menu selection is spot on. It's done up enough to merit its white table cloths but not overly pretentious like a lot of the Indian joints around here. Quaint and kitschy if anything.

3.25 starsI have been to a majority of the "buffet" spots, but somehow I always missed this one. The food was decent with a few exceptions. A huge positive is that the food is seasoned and does not overwhelm you with mouthfuls of spice-bombs. Even at a buffet though I feel the dishes that are meant to be spicy-hot should be just that. It seems to me they are serving slightly watered down versions. All the vegetarian dishes I tried were quite good. The tandoor chicken is above average and they way the serve it, smothered in onions keeps if from drying out. Unfortunately the nan is left out to get dry. The pakoras were extremely oily and over fried making them hard. The onion chutney was weak, and did not taste that fresh. My mango lassi was more fruity than most I've had and very good.Overall I am impressed enough to return for dinner and IP will be in the lunch rotation.* Excellent service* Nice atmosphere, comfortable room and seating.* A good value and they have takeout for the buffet.* Mild on the spice

Wow, Wow, Wow!!!!Disclosure: This review is based on the fact that I am currently living in Chicago where the Indian food is crappy and expensive.Chicken Tikka Masala - chicken was moist and tender, the curry was creamy, buttery, and very flavorfulRogan Josh - great sauce, huge chunks of tender lambOnion Kulcha - great portion and my husband thought it was better than cold pizza the next dayVegetable Samosa - crispy, large, and sinfulMatter Paneer - excellent, no skimping on the cheese here. I give this place an A+ even though I haven't tried any other places in the area yet. On top of that, our bill was about $30 for all of that. I thought they had made a mistake.

the cheapest costing indian food i have had thus far. not to mention their food is great. i must try place when in cambridge.
by Ginger C.
Maybe I was there on a bad night? My food was okay, not the best I've had. The naan was on the chewy side. I thought the Chicken Tikka Masala was a little bland and generic. The atmosphere was weird and not in a quirky way, one of the kitchen staff who was taking a dinner break was staring at me the whole time he ate... creepy. Probably will not go back.

Great place to get your Indian food fix! My review of this place is long over due.A two person vegetarian dinner is only $23.95 and includes: soup, poori or paratha bread, rice, 4 different entrees (nice variety!), dessert, and tea or coffee. I'm not a vegetarian, but get this one because it's slightly cheaper than the meat version. Either way, still a great deal with the variety and amount of food you get.The food is delicious! The poori is nice and "poofi". The kulfi (pistachio with spices) ice cream dessert is yummy in my tummy. Can't wait for my next date here!

Easily my favorite Indian restaurant in Cambridge, which is quite a considerable feat considering the glut of almost indistinguishable eateries representing the little Asian subcontinent-that-could in Central Square. The food is consistently delicious, with reasonable portions, just the right amount of seasoning (generally not too spicy), and the meat is always tender and flavorful. I've had many chicken tikka masalas and lamb kormas with underwhelming pieces of meat. Not the case at India Pavilion. The service here is also quite good, although not stellar. I've only had a few instances where items we ordered came a little later than they should have, but the staff have always been warm and willing to remedy any issues that crop up.I think the best part, and what sets India Pavilion apart, is the fact that everything is surprisingly affordable. I almost always will order the "Complete Dinner" option, which adds a soup (mmm...coconut), rice, dessert (gulab jamun!), and drink of your choice to a regular dinner entrée for usually only $2 more. Everything included, you can get a delicious meal for only around $12-$14, plus tax and tip.Of course, you'll want to order a basket of their superlative naan too. Yum.Oh and they deliver too. Score!
by ryan h.
I was expecting a lot from this place since the reviews were so good on here. The prices were fair, the food was a bit above average as far as indian goes but the service was terrible. Water wasn't refilled until after the meal was finished and soup was brought out at the same time as the meal.
by K T.
I really want to give them 5 stars. This is where my boyfriend and I like to go or order delivery from... but their food is not consistent enough. It's easy to notice when my boyfriend and I almost always order the same dishes when we have Indian. Usually, I get Chicken Tikka Masala while he gets Lamb Saag. A couple of times my curry was either too sweet or too sour. My boyfriend loves his lamb, and it's very well prepared. Usually I avoid lamb because it smells like the zoo to me, but not here. Their mango lassi is nice, and they don't add ice like some places! (thank you!)Last time we went, I accidentally ordered Chicken Tikka because I thought it was the same as Chicken Tikka Masala... and it was a pleasant surprise!! Next time we go, I'm going to try more dishes!!
by Jennie H.
I totally come here for the curried chicken soup. Sometimes I'm the creeper in the corner downing two bowls (they're tiny, ok) of randomly delicious soup. I think they roll their eyes when they see me coming because my bill is usually less than 6 bucks. Also, the Peshawari Naan with apricots, coconut, and almonds is amazing.
by Elizabeth F.
Next time I come, I'm totally getting samosas.I want to say the lamb was melting from the bone, but there was no bone, so my dining companion put it best: The lamb was melting from itself. The naan was fluffy and delicious, and even the basmati rice was good. This is notable because I normally can't see the point of rice that isn't brown. The onion chutney, which at other restaurants is simply chunks of onion in a red goo, was more like a tasty salsa.
by Jeff M.
This place is just BLAH! It was not the most comforting/cleanly dining room I've ever been in. I am pretty sure samosas came out of the microwave. Rogan josh had a stronger tomato flavor than I expected for the dish. Lamb korma was not creamy enough. I am 95% sure the veg tables in the biryani were frozen. Breads were decent. Garlic on naan was a little burnt. Next time I am craving a curry I'll just stick to Pavilion's cousin Punjabi Dhaba. If I want a dining (ie waiter service) experience I'll head to Tamarind Bay.

Food: +3 stars. Reasonable quality Indian food. Nothing to freak out over, but decent.Price: +1 star. The add $2 for coffee, soup, appetizer, dessert, etc. is a darn good deal. Dishes are reasonably priced.Service: -1 star. It is somewhat annoying that for the "dinner" deal you need to request each item or they wont bring it (for example, you have to specifically say I want a coffee; they don't offer coffee or tea?). Also, the cream for my girlfriend's coffee curdled at the table, yucky!there are other indian places to go to. cross the charles and check out India Quality by BU; its fantastic. but if you are stuck in central square its an ok option.

Oh dear "IP"...we miss you dearly...This is the first place I ever tried Indian, and it won me over and became one of our most frequented dinner spots the past 3 years. My fiance and I would come here when a craving would hit about every 2 weeks or so. We have since moved, sadly, but we'll make the trek back. The place is cozy inside, you can watch bustling Central Sq out the window, service is impeccable and the food is excellent. It's the standard that we use to test other "Chicken Tikka Masalas" against. -Still haven't found a better sauce, it's more red, less creamy with cinnamon sticks (many times in the sauce) and the dark meat is so flavorful! Their veggie pakoras are amazing, crunchy, big. The quantity of rice is just right. Their Malak Kofta is also delicious.Their prices are unbeatable for the quality of food: we buy two entrees and an appetizer, and it's around $20, plus they give you those spicy wafer chips with that onion chutney-like salsa for free while you look at the menu.Polite and super professional waitstaff, quality food, and low prices. It will always be our favorite Indian spot :)
