Red Fez Reviews
by Stephen V.
Great place to hang out and listen to the local bands they attract. Normally world music or hip-hop, the place can really be fun to hang out. The only problem is that when it gets nice and crowded you need to be ready to mosh your way back to the bathrooms, which isn't always fun when you've really got to go. Drinks are expensive, but well mixed.

I had a good time at this bar and enjoyed the music which was a mix of rap, hip hop, pop, rb from my childhood (think bell biv devoe, kris kross, michael jackson) and stuff from today...stuff that makes the girls wanna shake somethin'..! the dancing area is small, but we did alright (7 girls). there may have been a lot of guys, but it was fine by me..hehe..

The music in this place is the shit. Its kind of a smaller place though compared to something like Vicci. It was a total sausage fest last time I went so I was glad we had a good guy-girl ratio in the group I was in. This is definitely a place I want to hit up again.

Typically, the music is funky, and so is the smell. Try it.

first off it's been several months since i've been here. but man, for about, well... a few years, my friends and i tried to drink ourselves to death here. every weekend. what fun. back when chicken george was lighting this place up... baby girl and the evil one, among others pouring it deep. whew. what a great time.Strut, pout, put it out. ok, sheena easton lyrics aside, this review is for (i think) 2002-2006-ish. if you can go back in time please do. we'll be at the back bar hanging on for dear life. my friends look like serpico and john leguizamo.price range depends on how much emptiness you have to fill up. if you don't like standing in line... well, you know, handle it.

Love the Fez. I have NEVER not had a good time here. Sometimes it's packed with a line out the door, sometimes you can do cartwheels through the room (not that we do, of course)...always fun. It takes two things to get me dancing: good drinks and hip-hop. Red Fez has plenty of both. And you know it's a good sign when every other song has you yelling out, "THIS IS MY JAM!!!" (to the strange looks around you that ask, "Did she just say 'jam'?" ) LOL!

Only been here once but its one of my favorite places in austin that i discovered a few years ago- love it. go there...

I'm on the fence now. I've shook my booty, smashed some glass, turned over some tables, smoked some hookah and generally had a good time here. A week ago tho, a week ago, I and my crew drug in around pumpkin time on a Saturday night, squeezed through the ranks and looked around to discover the ranks were almost entirely of the meat packing variety. Now, I do love dudes, but not 400 dudes in a tiny place. What happened to the sisters in this joint? Has Red Fez gone the way of the Rainbow, as the rumor mill has it (this mill consists of one friend's drunk opinion in actuality), or were these 400 dudes just really diggin on that DJ?

Beautiful decor, nice sound system. The arabic nights seems enticing, the food was good.Good place to hit on your next "Knipe-enn tour" (barhopping).

The Red Fez is located next to the Lucky Lounge, and it's easy to see that both are owned and operated by the same guy (Matt Lucky). It's a suave place to hang out with a laid back atmosphere mixed with good music and great decor. The Red Fez is also a great place to star-watch when folks are in town. I've seen Steve Buscemi, Steve Guttenburg, and Nicolas Cage at the Red Fez on various occasions. In every case, most patrons just let well enough alone, enjoying the bar without making a scene over the celebs, which is probably why they keep coming back. The drinks are a hair on the pricey side, but the atmosphere is cool and even when crowded, it's a great spot to spend the evening.

Maybe it was my companion Isabelle, maybe it was the fantastic band Atash, maybe it was the 50 dancing, happy, interesting people.. who knows.. I give Red Fez 5 stars for a fantastic evening. I really like this place, it is very different than any bar I have been to in Austin. Laid-back, unique people smoking Hookah's and dancing their hearts out to Atash. Atach is the coolest band I have witnessesed..EVER. their sound is so unique and it gets into your blood and makes you happy and energetic.. NO COVER also. The place is very dark and romantic also.

This place is very small. For some reason the organizers of the social group I was in picked the Red Fez as the joint to squeeze what look liked 200 people inside of its walls. The bar staff was friendly, the sound system was good, and the cute little seats on the side of the wall were nice. But really, this is a freaking small place. Limited seating. My drink was expensive and like 99 percent non alcohol it seemed like, and if there was any music I couldn't hear it over the loud roar of the 200 of us, smushed in like sardines. Maybe its cooler on a quieter night?

Whenever I'm in the mood for some bumpin-n-grindin', booty shakin' action, the Fez is always the first place I think of to go to. I used to go a lot more often in my younger days (as I'm nearly 28 now), but it definitely has not lost its appeal. Sometimes I do get a little claustrophobic when I'm trying to make my way to the bathroom or the bar, but that close, intimate space where the "dance floor" is is almost necessary for getting to know your fellow Fez-goers. There is nothing greater than having a circle of people form around you while you're dancing to Michael Jackson or DJ EZ Rock. I can't wait to go back!

Thursday is the night to go for "old school hip hop". And by that, the kind of music I listened to when I was in grade school---OPP, ABC, BBD--the East Coast family. Yah, call me an old yuppie, but I still like hearing Billy Jean on the dance floor. [When I was young, stuff like Grandmaster Flash was old school]The drinks are fiendishly sweet and strong, in particular the Raspberry Lemonade and mojito. The place I end up after going somewhere else and then wanting to stay out at midnight, much to my bf's dismay.

I went here on a Friday night on a recommendation from my friend Sara, a native Austin-ite. This place was what we were looking for. No cover charge, cheap drinks (for a dance club), great music (great mix of different genres - 80s, hip-hop, Latin, top 40, raggae - you name it. they'll play it if it's good). This place is a step up from the nightlife on 6th street - it's an older crowd, better drinks, better music, and more relaxed, fun environment. There are two bars and open spaces for dancing (one in front of the DJ booth and another in the back). There are also hookahs, which was kind of random, but I guess is nice if you're into that type of stuff. But then I noticed the night we went was Arabian night which I had no clue which just proves how much I had to drink that night.

Austin's best bar decorated like the bottom of a swimming pool, the Red Fez is another buckle in the Lucky belt that encircles much of Austin's late night territory. The Fez formula, itself, is pretty direct: a small shotgun bar with regularly scheduled DJs, hookas (flavored Moroccan smoking pipes, not cleverly spelled ladies of the evening) and a bar staff-kabob of Austin veteran bartenders; the Red Fez makes a sprightly spot for taking in a beer, cocktail or a dance floor skid on your groove around town.At one point they used to stash the DJs high above the bar, and it was the smart choice to move them down in front of the crowd. If you have a soft spot for a good scratch and spin, give Wednesdays a try; I'm biased as I know one of the two jocks who make up The Reflex, but they stage an up-tempo set that seems to keep the crowds bumping.

Let's star by saying this is the place to shake your booty and get drunk. Hard to heard other people talk but if you are there that mean you are going to be dancing. I went to this club with some friends and let tell you that when one of your friend is drunk. it is hard to find that person because he is dancing with a strange he just met you are wondering where the person is. Every time I go to the Red Fez I have good time. Give the place at least one try and see how things go.

It was 7pm on a Saturday night and no one was there. That was cool with us though because it meant that we could have a table and hang out with no problems. Hookah was $15 and later in the night they had a DJ. I thought it was really laid back and a little more posh than 6th Street madness. I would go back again for the Hookah.

I have only been to Red Fez a small handful of times and every outing has been very average. Nothing really stands out about this bar except for Kurupt playing there each week. The bar itself is average and worthy of three stars but Kurupt gets them an extra star for coolness and style. The bar is small and gets very crowded very quickly, to the point you can hardly move. The service is fairly good at the bar but the doors guys have given some grief on more than one occasion. I believe the door staff is the very first impression of the bar and they should be the most professional and impressive people in the whole place, having rude or anti-social door staff is a big turn-off and a stupid business choice. However, with the way that bar staffs turn around in this city there is a great chance that the people I experienced on my visits don't even work there any more. Drinks are reasonably priced for Warehouse District, the crowd isn't as stuck up and crappy as some other nearby bars but not as laid back as Sixth Street either. Overall, this is a cool looking bar, with a decently cool clientle and not TOO much of the Warehouse District pretentiousness. The drinks are poured well and for a reasonable price. I highly recommend checking this place out when DJ Kurupt is playing, it's a ton of fun and the music is great.

The imperial decor of this bar is tasteful and modern. The stained lamps dangling from the high ceiling are certainly interesting to stare at when drunk along with the hexagon shaped bar shelves. The booths on the wall are separated into private rooms with decorated curtains strung to each side. The music on Saturday night was definitely a mix of rap and hip-hop. I personally get enough of that in Atlanta and expected an Austin DJ to have a wider range of beats. The dance floor could maybe hold 20 people, and the DJ was squeezed up on a small platform with his back towards the front door - it took me a few seconds to find him amongst the cocktail sipping, young professionals. Most were just out for a good time and stopped into Red Fez to check the place out (there was neither a line nor cover). No one seemed amused to linger much longer than a drink, and I certainly wasn't going to be the exception.

You can take one of two approaches when it comes to the Red Fez:Option 1 -- "Voyeur-du-jour". You're the type that enjoys coming to a bar that isn't located on the collegiate-packed area of 6th Street. You like to sip on a fine beverage all while absorbing the Moroccan flavor of the Fez. You like having a nice booth area to sit and chat (somewhat loudly) while you eyeball fellow Fez-goers at the bar or on the dancefloor.Option 2 -- "1..2..Pick-up-Chicks". Your idea of a great night down at the Fez involves a good drink, good times, and a fine lookin' female. This is a great place to come if you're on an awkward 1st or 2nd date and you both want to maul each other but keep your dignity intact with the "I had too much to drink and lost control" excuse. Plenty of darkened corners to slink away to or a packed dancefloor with great music where, conveniently, you can't help but bump nasties. Whether you're single and looking to have a good time, out with the Girls or flying with your best wingman, the Red Fez is a fashionable, reasonably priced refuge on the Warehouse District scene.

If you grab ass, you will get written up on Yelp. Julia Stafford you've been Yelped. I'm loading this up on http://www.theDatingRe... later btwOk so Red Fez is obviously the cool place to hang. Its nice with the narrow cuz people congregate nicely when its busy/slow. Ok the five star review may seem excessive but when hot texas girls dance with reckless abandon... It's 5 stars all day long.ALSO, someone (a good friend) came up and said, "I know someone in the bay area that looks just like you!". I blew it and said, "I know you"... I should've just been Larry Chiang's twin: Tony Lee. I can usually keep up the charade for a GOOD 15-20 minutes. During this little routine I even claim to know 'Larry'. It's got to be the most fun you can have in a bar: split dissociative personality with close friend participation. But then I don't haze my SF (guy) friends.effen Californians are always visiting our Austin.

I was in town for a week of training. I had missed out on my regional session in Santa Cruz (OOPS!), so they signed me up for one in the Live Music Capital of the World - Austin, TX. (YAY!) I was one of three from San Francisco. Most everyone else was from Texas and surrounding states, with a few other stragglers like myself from random cities. And for the first time in the last few years at this company, I had a fantastic time at training. Red Fez was a part of that experience. Middle of the week - a group of us, packed in two cabs, hit up Trudy's for dinner [http://www.yelp.com/bi...]. MmmMMm - Mexican Martinis! and then Red Fez. No live music or even a DJ because we got there a bit late, so we just picked a spot and sat down. Fairly empty on a weeknight.Boston, Tulsa, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Denver, New Orleans - all bonding around an apple-flavored hookah. Good times.

Hey Red Fez,I know things have been awkward between the two of us since my 29th birthday fiasco and I puked in your entry way-but real lady like-just a small amount of puke as I tilted my head to the side and my friends tried to catch it in a cup. Sorry about that. I hope we can get past this because I like you better than Lucky Lounge and your music pretty much rocks.
by Lisa V.
We had walked into the Lucky Lounge and talked with a guy there.... He said if we had any interest in going to Red Fez we should leave there now to get in. And since there were about 4 people in Lucky Lounge, we made a beeline over there. Thanks for the tip! This place was crowded and def had a cool vibe you want in a bar. If I was in Seattle, this bar would be in Capital Hill.... If I was in Chicago, it would be in Wicker Park/Bucktown area.... Isn't it funny that whatever city you are in, it can be translated into another place? There were a ton of hookas at the very top of the bar and then where you would find the bottles of liquor, it was shelves in the shape of honeycombs. Which in my opinion were the perfect little house for my beloved Stoli. I also loved all the wrought iron lamps strung from the very tall ceiling with stained glass. And with all this ambiance, they had a great DJ spinning all old school hip hop / RB. I hadn't heard some of those songs since I had been drinking Busch Ice in a fraternity in college. Ahhhhh.

Been going to the Fez for years now, which speaks volumes, as lots of good places close down before we'd like them to. The decor is beautiful. All middle-eastern styley. The music is generally good, depending on the night, but you can poke your head in for a minute and get a good idea of what they're layin down.My fave is 'Weekend Warm-up Thursdays', with a rotating staff of DJs spinning old school hip-hop, RB/ pop. Songs that make you say "awww shit!" in a Barry White voice. If it's too packed, which Sundays can definitely be, it is hard to navigate the long walk from the front to the restrooms, and it gets about 3 deep at the bar. All in all, not quite as awesome as it used to be, but still keeps it lively. And yes, the hookahs are fun, but be prepared to deposit $200 in case you break it.
by Jon S.
Red Fez is a cool bar. It's not super douchebag, but it's not too cool for school, either. It's just cool enough for school, in fact.I really like the setup, although when it gets packed you run the major risk of beer-soaked shoes and jabbing short women in the boob with your elbows. When there is enough space in here, though, it's seriously off the hook. Hookahs are a nice touch also, although Red Fez always screams "you must get ridiculously trashed tonight!" and that usually precludes any chance of me sitting laid-back-like with an oz of honey-peach tobacco. Also, aesthetically speaking, tile mosaics are Morocco's gift to planet Earth, and I love any place that has them! (Red Fez does)

I love this place because you can both smoke hookah and drink (and not just Lone Stars my friend, but the real stuff your dad hid in his medicine bottle). This is unique in Austin. Smoking cigarettes and drinking is not quite the same, I don't think.Red Fez has really great DJs from time to time. My beef with the Fez is that they stop serving hookahs past midnight, which may or may not be because they also serve alcohol at this place. I always get the urge to go there but then I realize its almost midnight. Murphy's law I guess. It's just as well I don't go as much as I used to because there are some incredibly territorial people who frequent that bar, as well as some skeezy looking guys. I don't mind having a good time down town, but the atmosphere seems exceptionally less laid back than most joints and more like every single person in there is on crack.I don't go there for the hookah which is more for relaxation in my opinion. Still, when I think of partying down town I think of the Fez. The triple combo KO of hookah, booze, and dancing can't be beat.
by Johnny A.
This place usually does not have a line and I've never seen more than 10 people inside. Which is good if you are looking for a chill atmosphere to relax and smoke hooka or whatever. It is a little pricey for a hooka joint but the vibe inside is well worth the cash you'll lay down, well unless you are looking for a crowd. I thought it was a fun way to mellow the night. Mos def worth checking out if you have extra time or need a place to hold you over before hitting up the next club/bar haha. They really need some more hooka bars in Austin though, the scene is not that strong to begin with.. Maybe this place can help it a little?

One question: WHY am I only JUST NOW discovering the goodness known as teh Fez??? Anyone? We wandered in last night in search of draaaanks and some bad ass musics. We found both at Red Fez, and quickly slipped into full-on bootieshakin' mode. Love that hiphop reggae goodness. The crowd was a mixed bag o fun and it lacks that meatmarkety feel that so many of these places tend to have. It was fun and comfortable. We will definitely be back. Huzzaaaaahhhh!

The Red Fez is my guilty pleasure. Take me downtown, get a few drinks into me, and I'm going to start bellowing to go here. The reasons I love it so:1) It's dark. And let's face it, we're all much prettier in the dark.2) Not a dancer? No problem--the dance floor is so tiny that no one expects to see any great moves. Just shake it and forget it.3) If you're in need of an ego boost, it's pretty much impossible not to get hit on. 4) You never know who'll you see. I ran into a friend from high school I hadn't seen in more than 10 years--and we went to school in Colorado. I've also seen Dennis Quaid and Luke Wilson here (both shorter in person than you'd imagine, FYI).When you first go, you'll be surprised at how tiny it is. And it gets packed. It also gets unpacked--that is, it's kind of hit or miss. Be sure to get there late.My only complaint: Red Fez, where is the Tito's love? I need me my Tito's.
by Christian H.
I love me some Fez. Good drinks, if a little pricey, but then... welcome to downtown Austin.Place has a groovy vibe and very good music (usually, once there was a so so DJ but it was still a good time). Can get crowded but if your up to shoulder through it can be a fun time and some good dancing.
by Rosalind C.
I would give this place 0 stars if I could. After partying at the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) Dinah Lakeshore event on Saturday night, my friends wanted to keep the party going by going downtown. We were all dressed nicely dressed, totally appropriate for any bar in Austin, TX. Pay close attention to these details.First in line, one of my friends with long beautiful blonde hair pulled back in a pony tail was wearing a button down shirt with a vest. She looks stereotypically feminine and was let in, no problem. Second in line, my friend with short hair in a zebra print dress and heels was also let in, no problem. However, the next in line were two of my friends with very short hair and they were wearing what would be considered more masculine outfits (button up shirt and slacks) with very nice dress shoes. However, these outfits were no more masculine than the outfit worn by my friend with the long pony tail. They were not let in. The doormen flat out refused their entry. They gave NO reason for refusing to let them in. When questioned, they gave no response. This ultimately upset my friends. They knew that they were blatantly targeted because of their androgynous appearance, or what may have been considered overly masculine and it shows exactly what kind of stance those door men at the Red Fez take regarding GLBTQ people who refuse to conform to heteronormative gender representations and standards. I urge anyone person who is an ally to rethink if they want to frequent the Red Fez. With so many choices in Austin, TX do you need to patronize someplace blatantly discriminatory?

This review is for 4/22/07After dinner we explored the 6th avenue bar scene and ended up here. We chose it because of the Middle Eastern decor and ended up loving it for their VERY reasonably priced cocktails and awesome music. Plus they had a caipirinha on the menu so it was all over for me...we hit the jackpot! There was no cover and the DJs were spinning and scratching the old school hip hop! DJ Kurupt came over and bought me my hubby a round of Three Olives Vodka shots as a "welcome to Austin". As an added bonus, he was spinning with one of Ludacris' DJs JC. We weren't expecting to stay all night but we were having so much fun we just shut the place down!

This is another one of those places that took me far too long to finally get to yelping about, and in the mean time, has been talked up by tons and tons of people, as you can see with all the glowing reviews so far. So, what can I add to the mix? Hopefully there's something of value.Wednesday night. Unforgettable every single time I go. Atash plays middle easter music from roughly 10-midnight, the drinks are always flowing, and people are gyrating up and down, and if you're within 10 feet of the stage, you have no choice but to do the same. Red fez is one of the nicest establishments that allows hookah smoking indoors, and they're not the cheapest, but they are tasty and tend to be well maintained by the bar tenders. Try to get there early and snag one of the front tables, that way you can camp out next to it and have your hookah safely standing on the table in the enclave.

So Red Fez is one of my favs. Awesome laid back atmosphere...friendly bartenders and doormen. Reasonably priced drinks. There's never a line whenever I come here. AND...Hookah! THAT'S what sealed the deal for this place...the hookahs that are available for use! I especially love the padded benches on an elevated floor, kinda dark. Very fun. Thanks for the wonderful experience Fez. There will be more to come!

Such a wonderful nightSeveral years ago when I still lived in Texas, I went to Red Fez with a buddy of mine and two girls from Bulgaria whom he knew for awhile. It was such a great evening in the city, and we ended our night here. I loved the interior colors, drinks, and beats that the DJ kept turning out. The clientele were also relaxed and unpretentious for a club environment; it was one of the more laid back clubs that I have experienced. I still cannot figure out what made that evening so special, but I know that the Fez played a role in making it memorable. Next time I am in Austin, I will be hitting this place up for sure.
