Well, this place gets an automatic star for having a cool name like Sarah. Add to that their freshly made pita wraps and hummus/rice/salad plates and you've got yourself a four-star Mediterranean eatery.Sarah's opened in the Fall of 2006 and has yet to make a strong impact on the North Austin neighborhood. Not to worry. The part-grocery, part-restaurant is small, but mighty. Tons of Mediterranean-inspired and imported foods for purchase at reasonable prices. Canned goods, pasta, hummus, pita bread (frozen fresh), falafel, rice, beef chicken shawerma, grape leaves and of course, baklava. In the little cafe, they grill why you wait. I was very happy with my Chicken Shawerma pita wrap ($4.75). The cucumbers were crisp and the sauce was tangy and fresh. The one thing that caught my eye while visiting Sarah's was the expired Diet Coke I bought. I didn't mind, and it tasted fine, but I'd encourage everyone to check this place out. It's so sad to see a good business forced to choose between wasting stock and keeping expired food on the shelves. For a mini-grocery trip or a filling lunch, Sarah's the one. *FYI...the hours listed above are market hours. The grill is open from 11:30am-8pm M-Sat; 11am-5pm on Sun.*Scrumptious.

A coworker and I happened to take a trip here a couple weeks back for lunch.  We'd both been to Marrakesh  downtown a few times, and that was my major comparison point for Sarah's food. The prices are decent, they have an interesting selection of goodies to try, and the stuff we ordered (Lamb, chicken Shawarma) was good.  Hummus and rice were decent, as well.  I got a Feta roll to go for snacking later, and it was a bit dry for my tastes.  Took a bit longer than I expected to get food for the light crowd, but not awful like Lauren's visit.   Overall a good deal for lunch.  No experience on the shopping side of things.  I'd go again for lunch, though.A couple there was sharing a plate of their fries with hummus.  I'm curious about that, now.  Could be good...

I've only been once (so far!), but it was definitely a good experience. There weren't many people here when Liz C. and I arrived for lunch.  We were able to order right away - chicken schwerma plate for me, veggie plate (with falafel and tabouleh) for Liz.  I was a little disappointed that they didn't have gyros made of lamb meat - only chicken and beef.  They do have lamb kabobs, but I didn't try them. The guy behind the counter was really nice, which resulted in my feeling confused by the lack of tip jar or tip line on my credit card receipt.  These days, it seems like everyone you come in contact with expects a tip, and as much as I want to support the service industry, it was surprisingly refreshing to get good service without that expectation. Our food arrived quite promptly - I'd say within 5-10 minutes.  My chicken schwerma was good, although the rice was a little over-spiced for my taste.  Liz's falafel, which she generously shared with me, was terrific - nicely crunchy and the flavor was great.  I also tasted her tabouleh, which I thought was really good.  I had lunch envy. Both of us had tons of food (Liz even took some home, despite the fact that I kept sniping bites off her plate), and our meals were only around $6 apiece.Sarah's is also a market and carries all kinds of yummy-looking stuff (OK, and some not-so-yummy-looking stuff - you decide which is which), including big jars of Nutella, an olive bar, several kinds of potted meat, HUGE cans of dolmas, a variety of Turkish delight, Kinder chocolates (no eggs, though), and many other things that I can't possibly list. There was ONE thing that might have completely freaked some people out that I feel I should disclose, even though it won't dissuade me from going back.  We did see a large, dead water bug/roach in the corner of the dining area.  Yes, it was gross, but my feeling is - this is Texas, and that happens.  At least it wasn't a live one.Excellent prices, good food, and friendly service - all walking distance from my house.  It's a no-brainer - I'll be back!

I dig the chicken shawarma and i love the vinegar-full salad involved.. but then again I love anything involving vinegar. . the hummus is stellar. I only go here when I am ravenous. . . because this food is going to stick for a while, very filling.  I have recently been after the Za'atar.. yummy... if you like oregano and thyme.. eat this thing..it is the in the case of refrigeration next to the check out area.... vegetarian approved...   They also have a nice selection of tobacco for your hooka (sheesha). Hoses, etc. . if you lose or break something. They even sell hookas not sure on the prices or quality.. but they look ok. they have tons of interesting food to prepare on their shelves.

MISSED CONNECTIONS: spicy chick on bed of rice - m4c - 30 (burnet). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . you were the blond spicy chick hanging out on a bed of rice between the garden and the hummus... i think i heard the guy behind the counter call you schwarma.  beautiful name.i was the carnivore in the orange shirt across the table who kept eyeing you.  i know it's a longshot but i'd like to eat you sometime.coffee afterwards?

A neighbor recently took me to Sarah's for lunch and I was very happily surprised. It doesn't look like it would be an authentic Mediterranean grill and market. While we waited for our order, we perused the market goods. Lots of chocolates, pickles, dry goods, meat, spices and tea. Some more curious than enticing. We chose to eat there, and I wouldn't say there is an amazing ambiance, but  plenty of tables and chairs and some interesting paintings. Nice place to plop down for a bite, but don't expect candle lit serenades. I ordered the Chicken Shawerma Plate. It came with Hummus, Rice, House Salad, and Pita Bread. I subbed my House Salad for Tabouli.  The Shawerma had great flavor, and good moisture. It was also a very fair portion, I had plenty for a little snack all and all for later. The rice was good, overall I enjoyed it all...fresh and delicious. We also ordered some Falafel and Vegetarian Stuffed Grape Leaves. The Falafel was crispy and delicious. The Stuffed Grape Leaves, we had the last few so, while they were good, no major parades will be held in their honor, at least not the ones we had, which were a little on the small side (not that we needed MORE food). I also sampled my hommie's Chicken Kebab meat and it was good but not as rich in flavor as the Shawerma.

Tasty and very affortable.  I will have to buy a whole chicken next time.  They have great rice and the yogurt sauce is really nice.  I wish the gyro meat was fresher tasting but oh well who needs meat anyway?  You have to try the pitas.  I bought a bag of pitas and taught myself how to make bake pita chips and they are now my favorite treat!

I'm completely hooked on this place, and cannot go more than a week without my shawerma plate or at least something from here. With the shawerma plates you get plenty of food for a reasonable price. The hummus is great and comes with thoughtful touches. The salad is clearly a bit of an afterthought, but at least it's there and it's consistent. The rice is wonderful and the spices perfectly blended. All the meats you can get are flame grilled to order and very flavorful. The chicken is the best. The beef is good too, although you sometimes come across a piece that cannot be chewed. A piece of baklava is a nice finish. This place also has an identity. The twins (?) from perhaps somewhere vaguely mediterranean are friendly, happy, kinda cute, and seem to genuinely enjoy what they do for a living. The rest of the staff aims to please as well.I often grab a 1/2 pint of baba ghanoush (sp?) to take home.

They make a nice tzatziki.  It's all wonderfully inexpensive and moderately good.  The humus is especially tasty and the puffy rice with almonds is yummy.  The pita was tough, which could easily be remedied by warming it on the grilll, covered with a few drops of water.  I got a shawarma plate.  The seasoning was good and the halal beef was of good quality, though it was a tad overcooked, but what do you expect for six bucks?  I enjoyed poking around the little grocery, which also had low prices.  All told, the food is pretty satisfying and it's a great deal.

Wandering around my new neighborhood and homesick for Phoenicia Deli, I happily happened across Sarah's Mediterranean Grill Market. I ordered the chicken gyro and a couple of vegetarian dolmas and unfortunately was not very impressed with either. The dolmas were okay, but I've had much better even from a jar and the gyro left much to be desired in the way of gyro-ness. The chicken was weird in not a good way and the pita was cold and stiff. The tzatziki was decently tangy, but the sauce could not save this ship. The grill/market itself is clean and spacious and the selection of Mediterranean foodstuffs on the shelves, plus the reviews lauding the hummus, warrant a return visit...but it will be a cautious one.

I do love the falafel here. I'm not gonna lie people, I'm kind of a Austin falafel connoisseur, having tried the tasty chickpea treat in at least a dozen joints in this town. I like them in all shape, meatball, disc, coin, what have you. This place makes very good falafel. I like the rice pilaf as well. The only downside is that sometimes they are a little slow, even if there are no other customers. Tasty food, you can meander around the market while you wait. It's gonna be awhile.

my advisor, of all people, totally recommended this place and while we were dog-sitting, and just blocks away, my husband went over and picked up dinner.we were pleasantly surprised by the delicious hummus, tabouli and the moist, flavorful (and cheap!) chicken. Halal meat here, cool. yes, like others have said, we couldve used more pita but we saved on the carbs i guess. I definitely plan to visit again, try more from the menu and shop the market. my husband wants to go back tomorrow and try out the meat or spinach pies - sounds good to me! Moreover, the prices here are super reasonable. thumbs up!

Sarah's Grill and Market is often overlooked unless you live nearby. It's some good food for a low price. My favorites from there are roasted chicken with garlic sauce and their hummus. The chicken is well seasoned and comes with garlic sauce. I often get extra garlic sauce, although I noticed they started charging lately. Their hummus is also tasty and often fresh. I have tried some of their other dishes which were also delicious but nothing to write home about .  The ambiance is low key and the service is friendly. The market portion also has quite a few finds. Its the only place that I've found my doughy Russian tea cakes, although I haven't been searching Austin wholeheartedly. I recommend this place if you're looking for a quick eat or something take home. It's definitely a steal for the price and quality of food.

I don't know how I've never reviewed this place before, given that I eat here about once a week.  What's not to love about this place?  In our recessionary times, I certainly appreciate their low, low, low prices.  Where else can you get an entire rotisserie chicken for $5.25?  (Make sure you get it with the garlic sauce, which is just divine.  Oh, and have them quarter the chicken for you, so you don't have to do the work yourself at home.)  Entrees and sides are also ridiculously cheap and even better than what you'd get at Athenian Grill, for about a third of the price.  My go-to dish is the beef gyro plate, which comes with tzatziki and hummus, except I have them switch out the hummus for baba ghanouj.  The employees are super friendly, and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my order.  Be advised: their portions of pita are tiny, so I always add an extra order of pita (at a whopping 25 cents) with my hummus. While I usually phone in my order for pick-up, I highly recommend eating in and checking out the grocery store section while you wait for your food.  They have a great selection of cheap spices, as well as a wide assortment of imported, trademark-infringing foodstuffs.  It makes me nostalgic for my childhood days spent at my mom's Chinese grocery store.

Greek Week Part IV: The "Score! Almost..." EditionFirst off, this place smells freaking incredible. It definitely got me in the mood for eating their meat. Errr... yeah. *cough*As to the actual food, it was overall pretty good with one big reservation. I got a beef gyro,  salad and rice. The rice, as was previously mentioned elsewhere, is really damned good. So is the tzaziki sauce. The meat was... tasty but the portion was a bit small. The salad was definite weak sauce, though. It was only a half-step above the Austin Greek Deli horror show from yesterday. I'm definitely substituting tabbouleh for that next time around, as the tabbouleh looked mouth-wateringly good. They get 4 stars because of the incredible rice, very good tzaziki, a good choice of hot tea (bagged only though. Dang.) and bonus points for having lots of Halal options. I'm definitely thinking the shawerma plate will be in the offing next time around

I can't say I'm super-fond of it.  The gyro was dry and there was little to no meat in it.  Chicken kabob plate was ok, but it takes a long while to get your food and even when we ordered 'for here', we still got our food in styrofoam boxes.  One thing I absolutely love about this place though is their RICE.  That rice is magical.  I could eat a vat of it probably. Will update this after I try their falafel.  It's going to be hard though to beat Pars' falafel in my book.  We shall see!Oh yeah, even if you don't want to eat at the deli, there's still the whole grocery store with all the fun products-of-the-world.Still much better than Phoenicia!

I really think that if the rice at Sarah's were a man, I'd totally marry it. Seriously, I'm in love with the rice at this place...and I think it may love me back. But the other dishes are wonderful too. I've been a couple times and haven't been disappointed. So far, I've been most pleased beef gyro plate. It comes with salad and pickled turnips, the gyro meat, pita bread and tzatziki. Dolmas and tabouli are great too. I agree with Nicole L., the falafal wasn't as good as Tino's, but still tasty. When you're finished eating, be sure to check out the market. They have some cool stuff in there.

I'm on a forever search for the "best falafel in town". Since I no longer live down south and can't easily go to Lux cafe anymore (see previous review), I've found that Sarah's in a close running for first place right now. Not only is it a Mediterranean grill (offering a variety of Mediterranean deliciousness), it's also a Mediterranean market as well. Selling everything from pita's, to curry, to tea, to pastry's - I come here atleast once a week stalking up on all the various ethnic goodness they offer. Try the Jordan almonds. Seriously. My mouth died and went to heaven. The staff is incredibly friendly and although the aisles are narrow, the customers are just as nice, respecting others and moving out of the way to let me pass when needed. The only negative I have to mention, is service of the food can be quite slow on occasion, especially if there are a lot of other customer's dining already. But, you can always call ahead for to-go orders, or grab a chronicle for some News of the Weird and Shots in the Dark while you wait. Can't go wrong!

Previously only a Tom's fan, but now I am both a Tom's and Sarah's fan! This place is outstanding for the food and service.  Late night, other restaurants rejecting our attempts at eating before they close, and then we come by this little gem.We were welcomed in, asked what we wanted, thanked to be there, served very delicious and fresh Mediterranean food, and reminded that we were able to sit and eat while they closed shop!  And...it was for cheap...most under 7 bucks a plate!!! (with Salad, Hummus, Pita, Mediterranean Rice, Pickle, and Meat)  That is insane...with tax, my chicken plate came to only 6.40!For the family atmosphere and friendly service I would pay more.  In addition, with the amazing food I feel like we totally got our moneys worth.  This place also has an extensive and detailed Mediterranean market attached.  Lots of odds and ends that you can't find anywhere else including hookah and hashish!  Finally a place that doesn't overcharge and still is respectable to bring other people to!  I will be back soon, within the week, hopefully!

What do hookahs, kinder surprise, kefta, and sugar coated chickpeas all have in common? They are all names of Quentin Tarantino's children.Well, maybe in another universe. No, the correct answer is: you can buy all these things at Sarah's.  If you are looking for some Mediterranean fare and/or groceries, here ya go. Great hummus, reasonable pricing, super casual. That is all.

I had the beef gyro plate and my husband had the lamb kebab.   The accompanying rice and tzatziki and hummus respectively, were delicious.  It was relatively cheap and the place is clean.  If their food inspires, you can buy everything you need from their market to cook at home.    It's a casual place with service with a smile and friendly regulars. The falafel wrap is supposed to be pretty good.  I'll definitely be back soon to give it a try.

Holy Cats, I love the falafel here! All greenish and fluffy inside and brown and crispy on the outside.I ordered the Vegetarian plate (with falafel) and two dolma on the side. The dolma was less tart-ish than I like, and the taboleh was less tomatoe-y, but it was very light on the bulgur, which is so nice. Salad came with this too. It was so much food for less than 6 bux.I did not eat the pita, I only do if I'm really hungry, but omg the hummus. And it is only 4.95 to take a *pound* of it home! I have to be careful! I had a hummus bliss out.My lunchmate had a 1/2 rotisserie chicken and the same sides I had but with a heaping serving of beautiful rice with almonds. He asked me what the rice tasted of..cardomon? It was fragrant and just..ooh. good. I think his plate cost 6.75, but I know for sure that a whole chicken with no sides is 5.75 to take out. I called to ask my parents if they wanted me to bring them over one of these juicy looking things for them after work, but they had already blown their load  on Golden Corral or some such. But I'm definitely going to hook them up.I took back two pieces of Baklava for a work friend (.92 cents each) and she said it was awesome. I really was so intent on my food that I was blind to atmosphere and service, but I know that it was clean and bright, and I know that the counter man was sweet and we got our food in a timely fashion.I could eat this stuff DAILY.

Loveeeee love Sarah's!! I've been going here for years and I love the food and the grocery store. My boyfriend and I go multiple times a month and my roommate who was born in Jordan says the food is authentic and reminds him of his mom's home cooking.I usually order the chicken but the kefta is really good too. My favorites are the rice, hummus, and salad! I love pickled food and they have some pickled veggies sometimes with the salad. Also, if you like to smoke hookah they have great shisha, you can't go wrong with romman shisha and 3 kings coals. They are very friendly! This is a must eat!!

I've been here twice. Once for lunch a while ago. I wanted to get the dolma veggie plate, but also wanted to try the falafel. The guy was nice enough to split the dolma and falafel. And you know what? It all tasted freaking lovely. Dolmas were a little mushy, but they tasted good. And they give you some pickled turnip and pita on the side...Sweet. Or rather, pick.le.y. Yay!Today I went by there to get some goodies for a friend's party. Got some Zaatar (really good seasoned bread) and some of this incredible red pepper/eggplant/hot pepper spread/dip....I know. That's/a/lot/of/slashes///!In any case, I also got some of those wafer tubes filled with deliciously evil things that make them irresistible. All in all, I like this place. Good food. Good market. Nice people.

This place is next to my doctors office, so my sweetie and I decided to give them a shot.I am a confirmed meat-a-terian, so I'm picky about my veggies. Despite that, I had the veggie plate. When I got it, the tabouli looked way greener than I had anticipated, and I was afraid I was going to be chewing a parsley salad... au contraire! The tabouli was delish, the parsley was mild and in the background. The hummus was nice, though I like mine with some hot sauce which was not evident here. The falafel was just crisp enough on the outside while remaining moist and flavorful on the inside. The small house salad was also nice.I am not going to rave about the food. It was very nice and filling. What I WILL rave about is the price. Two of us ate lunch with drinks for just over $10 and both of us were full... and I'm a big boy! Even better, the market had lots of items to fill your cupboard with prices that looked fairly reasonable.Give them a shot... I think you'll like them.

I've been a fan of Sarah's since it opened a couple of years ago. I adore mediterranean/middle eastern/lebanese, and Sarah's does a nice job. I tend to stick to their chicken plates, my favorite being the shawerma (more flavor), that comes with hummous (I sub baba ganoush which is fabulous!), rice with almond slivers, salad and pita. It's the perfect amount of food, or if you're on the hungrier side, they have their deli case right by the counter and you can tack on some grape leaves or stuffed bread. I was craving a gyro one day and **beware** it's pre-sliced thin pieces of dry meat. Not recommended. Their store has a great selection of canned and frozen entrees/sides, and they've got a bunch of spices for sale at a good price. They have an olive bar, and I always keep some canned grape leaves on hand in case I need a quick party dish. The service is marvelous and it's a great all around place for a quick lunch or dinner.

The food here is really good. A bit stingy with the tabouleh .. I think I need a T-shirt .. "I just came for the Tablouleh". It is $1 extra to substitute for a salad .. worth it. And their 1/2 chicken is $7 and huge. Hummus is good. Pita is fair. So pretty close on this one. Plus the store is great for olive oil, tahini, zatar, etc. I actually prefer eating in the store to the DiMassi's ONLY because I have control issues over their all-you-can-eat mounds of Tablouleh and fresh pita. At Sarah's the meat and pies are the stars. Nice to have 2 local mediterranean options .. especially after moving away from the best local lebanese one I have ever been to http://www.yelp.com/bi... .. yep in Raleigh, NC .. believe it or not ..

I am so glad to have finally found my "go-to" Mediterranean place! I stopped by this place for the first time about 2 weeks ago and was hooked! I've been back once since and was just as impressed the second time around. We moved here from Houston where most of the Arabic stores, while extremely comprehensive in their offerings, are a giant disorganized, often grimy, mess. So, it was extremely refreshing to find a neat, clean, organized Arabic store with everything that we need. I was excited to finally find Sumac (an Arabic spice) after looking in several stores with no luck.Everything we've tried from the cafe has been truly delicious. My favorites have been the feta roll, the kibbe, the spinach pie, and the dolmas. The hummus and lebna are just the way I like them. The hummus has a strong tahini flavor is smooth without being grainy the lebna is not overly tart and goes perfectly with the kefta lamb kebabs. The desserts are also terrific. My husband is Palestinian his favorite dessert is kunafa. It's not usually sold in restaurants because of its delicate nature (it has a cheese base, and apparently does not keep well). I mentioned this to the extremely friendly woman at the counter and she told me that she makes it on occasion has a list of customers that she calls when it's ready. I, of course, put my name on the list about 2 weeks later got a call that it was ready. We got to Sarah's just as they were pulling it out of the oven and it was PERFECT! According to my husband, just as good as his family's recipe (a HUGE compliment from him).Sarah's is a fixture on our dining out rotation I suggest you put it on yours as well!

Ate here for the first time today.  It was absolutely fabulous!  I didn't believe good hummus existed in Austin until today.  I ordered the vegetarian falafel plate and a spinach pie, my friend got the vegetarian dolma plate and zatter.  Everything was incredible, the baba ghanoush and hummus were especially amazing.  On top of that the prices on everything were dirt cheap, the plates were both around $5 and more then filling.  Afterward we checked out the grocery store which had a great selection of imported food, as well as a nice selection of hookahs and shishah.  We bought a few things and some baklava for dessert, which was really great.Everyone who worked there was very friendly, it seemed like a family owned place.  I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for some great, cheap middle eastern food in Austin :)

WOW! I just moved here from Michigan, which has the largest population of Arabs outside of the Middle East. Which means I'm a SNOB when it comes to Arabic food. And this place is divine. They carry a garlic sauce in their case you MUST buy and slather on your sandwiches at home. So delicious. Their hummus and baba ghanoush is incredible, as is their herb-labneh. And their groceries are well-priced. AND...they're super friendly. I love Sarah's.

Though it is a bit out of the way for me,  I always try to stop by when I'm in the area. The lamb shank is awesome, every time.  Friendly service,  very affordable,  and very consistent. They have a lot of prepared items like kabobs, marinated meats, feta rolls and more... that come in handy to take home to make an easy meal. Also a full Arabic grocery with spices, ingredients, olives, breads, teas, candy, chocolate... Great place to grab lunch.

My husband was watching a tv show where they were eating Lebanese food and of course it got him craving for some. So I went on here to look for Lebanese food close by and found high reviews for Sarah's Mediterranean Grill Market. We decided to give it a try and all I can say is it was DELICIOUS!!! We were HAPPILY greeted by this little woman, who I assume is the owner. She was very welcoming and quickly offered us Baklava as a treat. She proceeded by recommending her favorite dishes. My husband ordered the Special Kabob while I had the Chicken Shawerma. Both plates were plentiful and full of flavor! And the hummus was amazing!!! My husband has never been a fan of hummus, but he ate all of his and then some of mine! It definitely hit the spot and we will be back! Good eats for cheap! Friendly service! What's not to love? Oh, and it's a market as well so you'll be able to find a mix of mediterranean foods!

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Austin.  Everything about this place is fantastic! The service is top notch.  The owners are SO polite and kind.  Their children (who are there helping out quite often) will grow up to be great people one day; they are so sweet.  You don't see a lot of kids with good manners these days!  Seeing this family always puts a smile on my face.  :)The food is incredible.  Their beef shawerma is the best I have ever had, hands down.  Their rice is unbelievable!!  It is SO good!  Their humus is delicious, I crave it sometimes and I am not generally a fan of humus at all!  I have tried just about everything on the menu and I love it all.  I love love love this place.  The prices are also great!

Only went there to pick up hummus and left with pitas, a spinach pie, some tahini and I had to stop there because i wanted to buy everything. Hummus = AMAZING. Stop in to this place and just try to resist. Everything looked amazing -- great market and FAST food. Plus their pitas lasted forever unlike HEBs. I can't wait to go back and put some of that schwarma in my face.

this place is awesome.  went here with CHRISTINA N. and my parents!  we tried every single kebab they have, and they gave us a sweet deal on them.  we also got a whole rotisserie chicken.  flavor was amazing. i think they're under new management now.  the owners are amazing and so friendly.  my girlfriend and i were their 100th customer of the day, and they gave us free dessert.  haha.  if you the chance to go, go!  you won't regret it.  the grocery store has a plethora of asian ingredients.  they have tons of self-ground spices.
