Cafe Vittoria.  Here is what you may experience:A tall, bald man who resembles Mr.Clean will shuffle you in and to your table.  You probably will be wedged in to a corner sitting very close to the next group of people.  There will be loud music, laughter, and frenetic waitresses all around you.The items you order will be fine, however do not expect very courteous or patient service. The name of the game to a very popular cafe such as this is to get people in and out as soon as possible.  I've been there many times - it's a great place to people watch. My friends and I have  had a lot of great times there. Although we did have a bad experience with a disrespectful waitress a few years back -and it put a damper on the place for us.  That was a shame because it really kept us from going back for a LONG time.

I love this place...Yeah, it's overpriced.Yeah, the coffee isn't the best.Yeah, the service isn't the most attentive. So what?Who says every cafe has to have all these attributes?I like going here on a weekday...after 10PM, with close friends. It has a great ambience, lots of character. It's got that great old school feel. Not old, because no one cared enough to update it, but quaint and beautiful. Almost casual elegance...Chet Baker on the speakers, empty for the most part and we can be as loud as want. High on sugar and LOUD! Makes for fun times...Just my $0.02...P.S. try the maple-walnut ice cream :)

On a lazy Sunday morning after church, I found myself ambling down Hanover in the North End, wishing I didn't have to leave Boston just yet.I had made a mental note to stop in the night before and had forgotten, so the inviting look of Caffe Vittoria drew my eye that morning. All I wanted was a nice coffee and perhaps a pastry, but I had a piping hot, nicely served espresso in a tiny demitasse  with a lovely slice of tiramisu.  THe waitress was extraordinarily friendly, and the place was absolutely unrushed on a Sunday morning.  The tiramisu, although it had been chillin' in the fridge, was still delicious and well-matched in flavour. As I sipped my espresso and looked around the room, I took in the tiled floors, pleasant ambience, and overall delightful lay out of the establishment. I'd recommend the place for out-of-towners like myself, as it was a cute little hideaway for a pleasant cup and a good moment with a book on Sunday.

I love this cafe.  Not when it's super super busy (like weekend nights).  But on a nice afternoon, it's nice sitting and having a real espresso drink (cappuccino, latte, mocha - they're all good). And if you don't want to deal with Mike's next door for a pastry - the house sweets are great :)

Best caffe mocha ever, east coast or west coast.  I've been drinking mochas since high school (a long time ago in a university town in the SF East Bay), and am always looking for a better one.  They changed the recipe or style from a few years ago, but it still brings a big smile to my face.  Any time we come to Boston, I get a mocha here.  Caffe lattes are good, too, as are the other coffee drinks.  Chocolate covered cannoli is good, too.

Came here for dessert and coffee on a Chowhound rec, following a North End dinner. This place completely won me over when they sprinkled cocoa powder on my cappuccino. The cap itself was so smooth there was no need for sugar - wonderful! Great location, interesting antique espresso machines for decor. I tried to go to Mike's Pastry next door but they barely had 2 tables in there. Vittoria had plenty of tables, this was a weekend night in early June when the North End was crawling with people.

My friend, who was visiting us and used to live in Boston, suggested that we get dessert here (after dining at wonderful Cibo) as he believes it has "the best tiramisu in Boston."  Now, this is coming from someone who loves food and has made extensive forays into all manners of North End Restaurants.  Seriously, this is a guy who made me get up early after a late night of drinking so that we could go BACK to the North End and stand in lines at THREE different pastry shops so that he could get the perfect combination of cannolis (two different kinds, because apparently the ones at Modern are better suited for light snacking and the ones at Mike's are for when you're really hungry) and tiramisu to take back home with him.  Bottom line, I trust his opinion.Four stars for Caffe Vittoria because the tiramisu was notably delicious, and it's not one of my fave desserts.  The alcoholic coffee and hot chocolate drinks are STRONG -- and $9 each, FYI.  I hate it when restaurants don't post prices for their drinks.  The atmosphere was fun and crowded.  I'll be back here again.

Cafe Vittoria was excellent, I went here with my sister (who was visiting) and we stopped by for some coffee and tiramisu while walking down Hanover St.. I didn't get anything to drink but the tiramisu was excellent, by far one of the better ones in Boston and my sister said that her cappuccino was to die for. The only reason this place loses one star is because we had to wait for almost 25 minutes to get some service. But then I guess that's expected, it is Hanover St.!

Caffe Vittoria is a fun way to end an evening out in Boston.  Have a slice of cake or a cannoli with some tea, coffee, or a cocktail.  It's cramped with lots of old pictures and things hanging up around the place.  Service can be a little iffy, so take your time and enjoy.

I am not in the North End often. I love cooking and Italian has been my cuisine of choice lately. I can do pasta, chicken, fish, sauces and even a few desserts. What I cannot do, however, is coffee. I love the coffee here. I love the atmosphere. I like the service and the pastry selection is decent, even on a busy weekend afternoon. In warmer weather, be sure to grab one of the few seats outside. If you don't mind the street traffic, it is a great place to people watch with a huge latte and some lace cookies.

Walking through North End + 70 degree night + amazing cappuccino + amazing banana gelato + crazy cranky senile waitress + bustling North End lit up = romantical (I know, it's not a word..but it sounds amazing).Cheap, in the heart of North End, amazing gelatos, and amazing drinks.  For pastries, I'd say Mike's or Modern is better...but Vittoria is a great place to sit, people watch, chill out, and be in good company.

Have visited this place four or five times in the last few years and, though I can't really speak for its authenticity or sophistication (check the pic - i'm a super white, Midwestern suburbs guy who hadn't even tried coffee until college, which led to a twisted devotion to the seasonal urn at Campus Convenience), but I do enjoy this place.  And actually, from the little time I've spent leisurely wandering around Italy, I can say that it certainly isn't that rare to drop in on a place like this and have slooow service.  Look around you - chances are, in Vittoria, there are several tables full of duos and trios chatting the afternoon away over empty cups with drying rings of foam and petrified drips of espresso down the edges of cups.  The environment isn't set up to turn tables over as fast as possible, and I try to take that in a good way. Now, the place is pricey, for a coffee shop.  As I said, growing up in Ohio, I am someone who still catches himself calculating his checking account as soon as plans for a "sit-down" place start gathering steam.  The Vittoria is the kind of place that doesn't even bother putting their prices on the menu.  So there's that.  In fact, I don't even know what I paid for an espresso and gelato.  They were tasty, though.  The gelato was very smooth, served in a teeny bowl with a dainty little fancy spoon, and the espresso was hot with a subtle creme and no grinds (which is my new standard for good espresso, after having a single at Second Cup in Allston that they may as well have just given me a fork with), served in a nice ceramic cup (never seen a paper cup in this place, as one review claims below).   Coffees, mixed drinks and Italian sodas I've had in the past here were all great.  I visited the CV once last weekend, on a Sunday, and walked right in a got to pick my table - the staff were all young females, maybe a bit hands-off, but very helpful and open to me grabbing chairs from other tables for our party of 6.  There's a full bar and they specialize in dumping shots of it into your coffee, which should be taken advantage of. It's been a few years since I've gone in the right entrance for whatever reason, but I remember that one being a bit more colorful and full of antique coffee gear and Old World memorabilia (also Old World clientele, including older Italian women who won't think twice about kicking you out of their usual table in the corner, which happened to me once - I was honored).  A sharply-dressed bald man moved among the crowd on that last visit talking to all the older visitors like family - if he's still around, his presence will certainly fulfill whatever fantasies you might have of hanging out in a real "Italian-feeling" kind of place.  The left entrance is a bit more light and informal, with sports playing on a TV placed in one corner.  As I remember it, the cigar room was in the basement, but it's been years since I've even bothered to check.

Impress anyone with a first date here.  Ambiance is old world Italian, staff is attractive and attentive, cappucinos and cannolis are fantastic.  Going to turn this into a place where they know my name and my order.

Quaint and classic are two perfect adjectives to describe Caffe V's.  I went with a girlfriend on a Tuesday night, when only a few of the tables were full.  We were immediately assisted by a cute waitress (the only one for all the tables); she was helpful and quick.  I got a caffe with brandy and mocha liquor (super strong), while a friend got a cappacino, along with tiramisu and cookies.  It was a great atmosphere, however I bet it gets disgustingly busy and annoying with tourists during the summer.  I'll definitely head back the next time I'm at the North End.

This simple café is right next door to the Freedom Trail stop of Mike's Pastry in the North End....they offer an assortment of gelato, desserts and Italian beverages. We decided to get a scoop of gelato and a cappuccino....the price of the gelato @ $3.50 is alittle steep for the amount you receive, but the cappuccino at the same cost and ability to sit down balanced the price out. This place only takes cash, as many other North End smaller establishments do (didn't know that this was general knowledge of the area) Service was disappointing (the lady behind the counter gave me a blank stare as I asked for a table...hello?!) and prices are a bit too high for what you get in return. I guess I got alittle too excited about venturing into what appeared to be an authentic Italian café. The thought of bringing back memories of a previous Italy trip was rudely awaken by the so-so service. It's basically an afternoon pit-stop while you wait for your tourist friends in the huge line at Mike's pastry....

Now that Cafe Graffiti is closed, this is the best place to get a Cappuccino. The setting is fantastic; classy, cluttered, and Italian. Service is often inattentive and chaotic. It's a good place to take a group late at night to wind down or wind up. They serve alcohol, though I generally stick to the coffee, so I won't comment on their cocktails. In my experience they've been pretty tolerant of bringing pastries in from Mike's or Modern, as long as everyone in your party is ordering drinks as well.Black coffee with Amaretto or Frangelico can be nice, too.

There are few places that make my heart skip a beat but Caffe Vittoria is one of them -toki-doki-From the dark lighting to the metal of the espresso machines everything just seems right. The staff tends to hang back a bit but it works in a way that keeps you wrapped in the ambiance.  Ideally you show up and get a nice little table order an espresso and grappa and everything outside disappears. tip - a date here = likely very serious or very seriously trying to get in your pants

Wow, 69 reviews!  They don't really need mine then, but I wanted to post the pictures I took of a couple of their desserts tonight. The waitresses were friendly and worked to find our group of 6 a place where we could sit together.  Somehow, my tiramisu was missing when they brought out our order, but that was quickly remedied once I asked about it.  The menu neatly listed the drinks and desserts that were available at the cafe, but prices were not posted.  I think however that the tiramisu (creamy, light, delicious) was $4, and the cannoli $3.  A friend's cappacino was garnished with powdered cocoa which melted, and looked very much like a chocolate fried egg to me.

This is the place to grab an espresso and a gelato after a meal in the North End, in my opinion.  The setting has a lot of charm, and the only missing star is because the service isn't spectacular.  Very often it is quicker to go to the counter and then find a seat.  The coffee is always good, though my cappuccino the other day looked more like a latte.  I ordered the hazelnut gelato, which was kind of sweet....next time I will go with the pistachio.  Also good to know: they have a full bar, and are all about adding booze to coffee, which is always a beautiful thing in my book.

I've still never had a cappuccino that lived up to those made at cafe vittoria. Not only do they use top notch espresso and know how to froth and steam milk well, but the powdered cocoa and cinnamon mix they sprinkle on top is a perfect compliment, that i have never been able to replicate, nor have i found anywhere else.If you are a cappuccino lover, this is the place to go in boston.

great north end atmosphere and one of my favorite places to end an evening. Their (alcoholic) coffee drinks are amazing, especially the one named for the place (I think it's called something Vittoria). Great choco chip canoli that tastes the same to me as Mike's, so skip the line and grab an (almost always available) table here!!good people watching too, seeing as it's all the crazy Italians :)

Ladies and gentleman - I have news for you. If you have always opted for Mike's Pastry for after dinner desserts, you are SEVERELY missing out on the North End's best-known secret - Caffe Vittoria. Unlike Mike's, whose harsh white light feels like bad sex in a cramped airport bathroom, Caffe Vittoria exudes a historic ambiance that is both real (not manufactured) and cozy. And while some places in the North End opt for the "modern" yet intentionally "derelict" exposed-brick look, Caffe Vittoria is the real deal. Established since 1929, the place boasts of old-tiled floors, antique coffee grinders, gilted sunken coffers in the ceilings, and old photographs of people that had been an integral part of the historic fabric in the North End. Most nights, if you are lucky enough, you can even find some chubby, leather jacketed mafioso sitting in a corner, graciously offering to buy you a drink (that is, if you happen to be attractive) - yet without expecting anything in return. And if you happen to crave a ciggie or hookah at that time of the night - the cafe is also connected to Stanza dei Sigari - a former gentlemen's cigar lounge downstairs hidden in a tiny room. Of course - don't get me started on the desserts! Having spent some time in Italy, I have to say that their espresso, cappuccino, tiramisu, and gelati (the blackberry is a must-try) are beyond a doubt, up to par - and in more ways than one - enormously worthwhile.

This is a great spot for desert and night cap to end a night in the north end. It's very cute and the desert is delicious. The tiramisu is awesome and the ricotta pie is very good also. Very cute ambiance and the cigar bar downstairs is also a very cool hang out spot. I highly recommend Cafe Vittoria!!

We wanted to go to Mike's but the line was ridiculous.  Cafe Vittoria was next door, so we thought, "Why not give it a shot?" We were seated quickly with no wait, and ordered cappuccinos.  It was nice to sit and warm up since it was a chilly fall day.  However, for some reason, someone kept leaving the door open and letting the chill inside.I think we kind of overstayed our welcome, especially since all we had were the drinks.  The waitress seemed to want us to leave but no one was waiting for a table, so what was the harm in staying and just keeping warm for a bit?Didn't try out any of the pastries, but I find it interesting how many of the reviews compare this place to not only Mike's but Modern.  A lot of people seem to think Modern's pastries are better than Vittoria's.  Funny.  While we were sitting there, some guys brought in several large boxes of pastries from Modern.  I don't know if they regularly receive food from them, but if the food tastes like it's from Modern, it probably is.

Came here for dessert after dinner out in the North End one night. Loved the atmosphere--it was very big and had a nice retro feel to it. It also wasn't too crowded--we had no trouble getting a table. The service was pretty quick. The tiramisu was very good...clearly home-made and delicious, but not quite as good as Paradiso's down the street. The other sweets looked good as well. The biggest disappointment for me was getting a mocha--should have stuck to plain espresso or a latte. The mochas was wayyyy too chocolatey for my taste--I think it was hot chocolate with a shot of espresso. My boyfriend loved it, but it was too sweet for my taste. I'd definitely give this place another chance, especially if Paradiso was too crowded, but it's definitely just my second favorite cafe in the North End. (For that matter, though, skip Mike's next door, PLEASE---lines out the door for what? Go sit down in Vittoria and have an equally delicious cannoli without feeling rushed or swamped by tourists!).

Went for dessert and coffee after dinner.  Was very good!  Neopolitan, rum cake and chocolate ganache were all yummy.  And those that had various coffees enjoyed them.  Unfortunately I didn't get to the gym to work off that neopolitan!  Our waitress from Lithuania was great!

I would normally give this place a 4 as I remember a lot of visits post North End dinner in college, but this visit let me down as it was packed on a Friday night at 10pm. We ordered some dessert to go eat at teh new parks across the street towards downtown. When I went to pay for a cannolli, It came out to over $3.50. FML did that really just happen? When I went to go eat it, the filling was very runny and the shell imploded on first bite. How can you do this to people when Mike's pastry is just next door? Cafe Vittoria owes me a better experience. Next time people, next time!

It's one of those neighborhood gems.  Expensive coffee, but GOOD.  The lattes, mochas, pastries, and FRIENDLY customer service are worth the price you pay.If you are a coffee person, you will notice instantly the thick richness of their latte.  It's not just "burned water" like you get from certain chain coffee shops I won't name (haha).  And the mocha -- WOW !!  They don't just squirt chocolate syrup into your latte.  It's the real, chocolate powder - and so rich it seems like hot chocolate instead of coffee !!Four stars for customer service, too.  The owner guy is just hilarious, and all the other workers remember me everytime and make me feel very welcome.

I would make the long trip all the way to the North End just to grab a drink at Cafe Vittoria. The cafe manages to capture an old-school vibe. There's a juke-box in the corner, awesome artifacts all over the walls, a sketchy Crypt-Keeper looking statue across from the counter, what more could you want? Our waiter was hilarious, I wish I caught his name. He was an older Italian man, and promptly flirted with every single girl I was with. He came up behind one of my friends and started to dance with her, while before that he serenaded another girlfriend with a truly inspiring opera song. Definitely the highlight of our visit. My family drinks limoncello like it's water, and you can find a great shot of it at Cafe Vittoria. They have TVs everywhere showing the games, and there is plenty of room to house a big group of people for some relaxation. The only drawback is that they don't like to take credit cards. I told our waiter that I only had mine, and he yelled "MAI!" (Never!) and all hell broke loose (I ended up borrowing money from someone else, I'm not messing around with an Uncle Junior Soprano look-alike). But I would strongly recommend checking this place out, especially if you've never been to the North End and want an authentic Italian setting.

We hit this place as our first stop after a red-eye into Logan based on local yelpers' reviews... big mistake.  yes the space is amazing - basically a living museum but what I wanted was a good shot of espresso.staff didn't know how to use the machine = grinds / bitter cup.  also didn't really get that a macchiato doesn't have a pint of milk in it.

This is our traditional first stop when we get off the T and walk over to the North End. Caffe Vittoria's coffee is perfection -- when you order a cappuccino you get serious foam and just the right amount of milk to curb the sharp edge of the espresso. As for sweets: you'd never order hazelnut ice cream -- it  just sounds too weird, ; and from my barrista point of view, hazelnut syrup in your COFFEE is just a travesty! -- but hazelnut *gelato* is a thing from heaven, the flavor that definitely tells you you're not eating BenJerry's American-style. Mmmmm -- I discovered it right here a few years ago. It's very hard not to get two scoops, but I never do, because nothing is ever so good as when you finish the last little bit and are left wishing there was just one more bite... hmm, I could take a life lesson there, eh? Ahem, sorry -- don't mean to philosophize in a café review!Service is always friendly and slightly offhand and distracted as the barrista or waitress is chatting over their shoulder to a friend or a regular customer, and I like that -- feels neighborhood-y and casual. Doesn't matter who the friendliness is directed towards, as long as it's there, doesn't have to be AT me 100% of the time at all. Music is canned, but nicely eclectic -- so far in the last hour, I've heard Miles Davis, Madonna, Sinatra, and that guy Jen Aniston was dating, but none so loud that it annoys me when there's a song I don't like. Aw, now it's ballads in Italian. And the last nice thing is the wifi and how quiet it is in here on a Tuesday morning -- we've been sitting here working on our laptops for a couple hours now and don't feel at all self-conscious, no worries about needing to get up and make room for new customers, because there have been a few empty tables all morning. (Being good café customers, we always make sure not to camp too long during peak hours when other people want to sit too!) And it's a beautiful day and the sun sparkles off the tall windows. Ok, time to pack up and go find that lunch spot![AND I need a store where I can get a pair of shoes that will massage my feet as I walk miles and miles all over New Haven this weekend at the graduation. Anybody have a suggestion? North End shoe stores? Comfortable walking shoe brands?]

In one sentence: The staff doesn't know how to pull a shot of espresso. I ordered a double shot and it was more of a scalding hot, underextracted lungo. On top of that I paid over $5 for it. I told the Batista her shot was way too scalding hot.  Espresso is served around 165F, not 212F!  Cafe Vittoria is on par with the LaVazza you'd find on the Mass Pike. Stale beans, lackluster espresso and no idea how to serve a real Italian drink.  This is not what I was expecting for the North End at all.

I agree with other diners. This is the place to go for taramisu. Excellent. Wait staff can be a little on the rough side and they don't take credit cards so if you plan to have a few after dinner drinks with your dessert make sure to visit the bank up the street before you go. It was slow the saturday night we went.  Maybe that would explain the sour attitude of the employees. I think its about the business right guys. Lighten up and you might find that work isn't all that bad.

Hot chocolate on a chilly night.  But, you need to get gelato, too.  Peppermint stick gelato. It was the best peppermint stick I've ever had.  Cute cafe and sweet waitress.I will be back!! What a lovely gelati/booze/wine/grappa parlor in the sassy north end.  I went here tonight after…

The drinks are plenty delicious and the deserts are decent, but really you need to come here for Josephine, the waitress. She's the best. She's a grey-haired bespeckled fairy grandmother.  Gruff, yet effecient and sparse and terse with her words, she really completed our evening perfectly. She's like Anna Wintour with an apron and a Revere accent. It was 11:00 pm on a Sunday. Look, I'm tired, we're all tired, and Josephine's personality completely matched our tables, and was actually a breath of fresh air. We're all adults and don't need to be coddled with jargon speaking happy go lucky service. I just want someone to take and complete the order without much fuss, and Jo Jo my love, you nailed it.  I heart you. Thank you.  Sincerely, Whippersnapper at table 9.

Cafe Vittoria is such an awesome place. The atmosphere is great, and the look and feel is very traditional.  The place itself is pretty spacious, (you can sit down!!!), for the North End. I've been here many times and the staff is always friendly.  The drinks and deserts are just as great. I love their gelato, coconut being one of my favorites. I'd give this place a 3.5 based on food/drinks alone but coupled with service/atmosphere, and the fact that they're one of the places that sticks out in my mind out of the numerous other rip-off cafes in the north end.

Wait staff can be a little on the rough side and they don't take credit cards so if you plan to have a few after dinner drinks with your dessert make sure to visit the bank up the street before you go.
