I remember the first time I went to Sam's Boat back in my college days and the patio was so packed you had to wade through a sea of people to get to the bar. Apparently times have changed. I went to Sam's this past weekend for a family birthday party, and even with the MMA Fight on and college football the crowd was meek to say the least. The staff was helpful in getting everything arranged for the party and accommodating such a large group. The food was decent, nothing outstanding but good enough to keep my buzz to a minimum. The prices were a little steep from what I remember...$16 for a bucket of 6 domestic beers??? Not a deal to me. I stuck with draft but still ended up spending over $40 for food and drinks by the end of the night (an appetizer only about 5 beers). I would like to come back here during crawfish season to give their bugs a try, but otherwise I can't say I'll be back often.

This rating is only about the crawfish when it's in season.  I went several years ago, and it was nice and spicy and cooked perfectly (not overcooked).  It was great coming here with a group for a Sunday brunch at the time for $3 a pound and pitchers of beer. However, Wolfie's crawfish is better on the north side.  Spicier too.  And it's lower key.

Buy your male buddy a shot in the barbers chair, he'll thank you.Sam's has a great atmosphere and the waitstaff are all very friendly.I hate bugs.  I cannot stand them.  Their only purpose is keeping the food chain in check and amusing my cats when one of them trespasses in my apartment.  As a matter of fact there's an insanity-inducing gnat at my desk right now that's about to meet death.  I hate bugs, but I LOVE crawfish.  Crawfish - the bugs of the sea.  When I first tried crawfish, it took me a while to get past their beady little eyes - I wanted to make sure the things were dead, I wasn't looking for a  live action Twilight Zone scene.  I tried them and have been in love ever since.  The little buggers won me over. Thanks to my sister's graduation I had a fabulous reason to visit Texas during crawfish season.  Sam's boat is awesome for crawfish!  You walk in, seat yourself at tables setup for gorging on crawfish - a pail to ditch the shells and a roll of paper towels at the ready.   You can get 3lbs of crawfish with red potatoes and corn coblets for $16.50 or 1b for $5.95.  I ended up splitting 5lbs with my sister.  Add a cold beer and I was in heaven.  I probably could have eaten another 6lbs and stuffed a few of the suckers in my pockets to take back to Cali with me, but I have a feeling my flight-mates wouldn't have appreciated the smell. I'm not gonna lie, I don't even know what else was on the menu.  My sister ordered an appetizer of queso.  Other than that I vaguely remember scanning over some cajun items before my eyes zeroed in on the crawfish. The other patrons were laid back, the server was cool and the crawfish were large and perfectly seasoned.   I'm so glad I got my crawfish fix!Shhhhh don't tell anyone from my place of employment that I was here today during my lunch break for a good meal and umm nice toddy or 2. This has always been one of my top spots for Sunday fun-day, so I was thinking wow I'm craving gumbo right about now, so why not try them out for lunch. This was one of the best decisions during work hours that I've ever made. I arrived there, and there were plenty of seating, and the wait staff was really friendly ( Hey Cat). Little did I know they have happy hour there from 11a.m. to 8p.m. You know this was right down my alley. I'm surly going back again next Friday. Food Great Drink prices great Weather great Returning back to work. Not so great LOL.

Never been here for dinner, I am actually surprised that they have food, it just doesn't seem like that kind of place.I went here for drinks 2-3 times, and they were cold, cheap, and plentiful.  Normally, this place would get a few more stars, except for one thing:  bugs.  The deck is why I went here (its nice to be outside in Houston when the weather is great), but after being there for a little while the roaches came out.  And I mean all over the place.  Coming from New York, I knew roaches exist, but I had no idea that they fly!  All over the place!  Yikes, if only they could spray or something, I would like this a lot more. When I get back to Houston this summer, I am living inside the loop, so I am not sure how much I will make it out to Richmond.  But if they clean up the bugs, I would love to come back, its my kind of place.

The BF was back in Texas and he was craving some crawfish.  I'm always down for getting dirty with my food, so how could I say no?We drove by Sam's Boat and saw the place rocking (not to mention they were playing basketball on the big screen) on a Sunday afternoon.  After finding a parking space in the back lot, we ventured inside.  It looked like a "Seat yourself" kind of place, and so we did.  A waitress came by to help us out and we ordered a pitcher of beer.  She couldn't take our food order though, and I think it's because she was new.  (She had that "deer in headlights" look on her face because she was at lost as to what to do.)  We ended up with three pounds of crawfish, at $4.95/pound.  It came with two red potatoes and two small corn on the cob bites (check out the photo above).  I don't eat crawfish very often, it's a lot of work for the little bit of meat that you get.  But with three pounds to work on, I mastered peeling these babies apart.  It was a bit spicy with the seasoning that was doused over the entire dish. And if you like the brains of these things, they sure can be yummy.  But you have to watch out because there can be lots of sand still stuck in there.  So proceed with caution. We also took advantage of their 35 cents oyster on the half shell special (everyday 3pm to 7 pm).  It came with cocktail sauce and shredded horseradish.  They only give you one lemon wedge for a dozen oysters, so be sure to ask for a lot more lemons if you like your oysters with a citrus tang on it.  Service: Our food took forever to come out.  And at one point, when a busboy came to clean up some of our crawfish shells, he threw the trash ones right into the plate I was still eating from.  (Imagine someone taking the shrimp shells from the table and throwing them onto your meal, as you are still eating.)  As our friend was waiting for the check, another busboy came by with the dish tub to clear off the table and apparently dropped the entire tub and all its contents onto my friend's flip flopped foot!  (We're talking crawfish heads, guts, shells, etc.)  Ewww!Restroom: Pretty disgusting!  The floor was all wet, and even the toilet paper was damp!  No more paper towels (in the men's or women's room) either!  And watch out for the fast swinging door in the ladies' room, you might get knocked out!Overall, I want to give Sam's Boat a four because of the kickback atmosphere, outdoor seating, and live band.  I love that you can get down and dirty with your crawfish too here!  And how can you say no to cheap oysters on the half shell?  However, the place is a mess.  Service needs improvement and they take some lessons on cleaning up the place too!
